Lena in jail; faked photo from Michael; Bianca breaks up with Lena (break-up #3, by Bianca); Lena recovers her spine and reads Binks the riot act

RE-CAPS:

From The Official Site at ABC.com:
http://abc.go.com/daytime/allmychildren/episodes/2003-04/20030625.html

Adam accuses Michael of trying to buy up Chandler Enterprises stock. Michael denies Adam's accusation and points the finger at Lena. Meanwhile, Bianca sits with a jailed Lena, who insists Michael is responsible for the trumped up charges of insider trading she faces. Bianca is shocked when Anna shows her a photo of Lena in bed with Bob Barrett, the Chief Financial Officer of Chandler Enterprises. Lena is stunned when she sees the photo and hurt that Bianca would quickly believe the worst about her. Lena accuses Bianca of running away from love just like Erica. Bianca is jolted when Lena explains she can't keep having Bianca doubt her and says Bianca is scared to love someone. Lena won't defend herself any longer and her and Bianca's relationship seems to be over. Michael is furious when Bob Barrett arrives at his door, shocked that he is still in the country. Michael warns Bob not to cross him when Bob threatens to expose the fact that Michael is the mastermind behind the scheme to discredit Lena with the phony charges.

From About All My Children
http://allmychildren.about.com/cs/recaps/a/bl20030625r.htm

Lena paces in her cell as she tells Bianca she’s willing to bet her last paycheck that Michael set her up; she’s charged her with abusing her position at Greenlee Enterprises to buy up Chandler stock for herself and some Chandler executive named Bob something—she doesn’t even know him! As Bianca says she’ll talk to Anna and see what’s going on, the Chief comes up and asks if she’s been here all night? Bianca has, Anna tells her Lena’s facing serious charges.

Bianca insists they’re bogus, and questions if she has any proof at all? Anna explains there’s an extensive e-trail and there was an anonymous tip. Bianca declares that it was Michael Cambias, adding that Lena is certain he’s is behind this. She questions if Anna has talked to him, or to the Chandler CFO? The Chief tells her his name is Bob Barrett, and he’s implicated in this, too. Bianca asks why Lena would risk a prison sentence for a man she’s ever even met? That’s what Lena’s told her, and she believes her! Anna sighs as she asks, if she’s never met him, “How do you explain this?” She hands her a large envelope, and Bianca’s face falls as she removes an 8x10 glossy of Lena in bed with Barrett. She exclaims that she doesn’t believe this! Anna says it was left at the station in this unmarked envelope; she’s really sorry, but it’s also been sent to the tabloids. There’s a warrant out for Barrett; when he’s found, he will be charged along with Lena with insider trading. Bianca shakes her head as she says Lena promised, no more lies! Anna takes a step toward her as she says she’s so sorry, but Bianca steps aside. Anna sighs that it’s really awful when you love someone, and they let you down time after time, “After a while, it’s about all you expect.”

Anna leaves, and Lena asks what she said—have they found this man Barrett yet? Bianca steps forward as she looks at the picture and says not yet. Lena asks what she’s holding, and Bianca tells her it’s proof of what a fool she was to ever believe one word out of her lying mouth. She tosses the picture through the bars, and Lena gasps as she picks it up and asks where she got this? Bianca says Anna gave it to her when she asked if there was any evidence she was in bed with the Chandler CFO! Lena looks closely at the picture and says it’s unbelievable that someone would go to such lengths to make this look like it’s her. When she says it’s a fake and has been doctored, Bianca notes that it looks pretty real to her. Lena starts to have her look closer, but looks at her lover’s face and finishes, “If you look closer, you’ll see that once again I’ve lied to you and led you on.” Bianca guesses she shouldn’t be surprised after everything she’s done. Lena asks like what? Breaking it off with Michael and testifying against him, getting a job working night and day to prove herself worthy of her love and forgiveness? Does Bianca think she would throw that all away to sleep with some man for money? “Maybe I’m the fool to have ever believed in you!” Bianca protests that she wanted to believe more than anything that their love was right, but Lena bitterly says then Anna shows her a computer generated lie, this picture of her with some man and she wants to see the old Lena—the manipulator and liar who’s out to make a fool of her; she’s so blinded by what happened in the past that she can’t see what she knows is the truth! Bianca grabs the picture back as she says that is the truth! Lena asks if it would make a difference if she could prove it’s not? When Bianca doesn’t reply, Lena realizes she’s already made up her mind; chose to believe the worst of her, and needs to believe she cheated on her! Lena thinks she’s been waiting for something like this, what her mother’s been drilling into her since she was old enough to hold the hand of someone else, that no one will ever love her like her mother loves her.

Bianca asks what she means when Lena says she’s more like her mother than she cares to admit? Lena says she’s often told her how Erica is terrified of love and it’s impossible for her to give herself to anyone, but she’s obviously doing the same thing; she’s throwing away what they had for the sake of a lie, and doing it with a sigh of relief.

She wishes she were wrong, but at least Bianca doesn’t have to worry about becoming like her mother anymore, “It’s already happened.” Binks insists she is nothing like her mother; if she were, she would never have put herself out there and taken a second chance on love. Lena agrees she did; she took her back because she thought they were worth a second chance and had something worth saving, but she bails on it the moment anything goes wrong! Lena pleads with her to trust in what they have, to believe that there’s something that keeps drawing them back, and not to let Michael win again, “Bianca, you must trust me one more time.” Bianca’s sorry, but she can’t do this again. Lena is sorry, too, that she couldn’t see past her fear and allow herself to be happy. Before this she would have blamed herself, but she learned something this past hour that she didn’t see before, “No matter how much you say you want to be loved, the only thing stopping you is you!”

Michael calls the police station about Lena’s arrest, and learns that she will be arraigned today. Pleased, he hangs up as someone starts banging loudly on the door. He opens it to an irate Adam Chandler, who waves a paper in his face and asks if he’s seen the headlines? “I hired you to be a viper in your father’s nest—not Chandler Enterprises!” He rages that someone just snapped up a huge block of Chandler stock, “That someone was named Lena Kundera, doing your dirty work! Deny it—I dare you!” Michael agrees the terms of their deal was clear-cut—Adam brought him on to help divest his father of Cambias Industries. Adam again waves the paper as he tells Michael to explain this stock purchase, which is the first phase in the takeover of his company! Cambias insists his hands are clean; he doesn’t know how this happened, but he supposes Lena got greedy. If Lena’s been stockpiling shares of Chandler Enterprises, she did it without his knowledge or help! When Adam says he and Lena have been partners in bed and out—the plan was to take down Enchantment, Michael reminds him that Lena turned State’s evidence against him, and also switched her romantic focus to Bianca Montgomery. Adam shows him the front page of the tabloid, with a picture of a very compliant Lena in bed with Bob Barrett, Adam’s CFO, and a headline saying they’ve both been charged with insider trading! Michael shrugs that Lena can be insatiable when it comes to cash, but Adam laughs that Bianca Montgomery is worth a small fortune! Michael can only surmise that Erica made Mama Lion noises when Lena tried to get too close to Bianca’s trust fund, and she just moved on to more lucrative pastures. Adam asks if he knows nothing about Lena’s business dealings? Michael insists Adam did something even his father refused to do—he gave him a second chance to prove himself. That means so much to him, and he would never try to put a strangle hold on Chandler Enterprises! Adam wishes Bob Barrett shared his sense of loyalty; he’d strangle him if he could find him, but it appears his CFO’s skipped town. Adam wonders if Michael and Bob Barrett went into business together; although Michael says he barely knows him, Adam notes that they both happen to be Lena’s type. Michael thinks Lena’s type is anyone who can bankroll her high life, but he’s surprised she was stupid enough to get caught with her panties down! He suggests that maybe walking the other side of the street with Bianca made her reckless, but Adam asks, “Reckless enough to land in jail?” Michael agrees she’s in jail where she belongs, but Adam wants to be sure he’s not thinking of paying her bail and buying two first-class tickets to any country without an extradition treaty.

Michael asks what he can do to prove he’s on his side? Adam tells Michael to think of something that might help the police track down Mr. Barrett. When he hesitates, Michael asks if there’s something else? Adam says there is something else, but he can’t quite put his finger on it—yet! He leaves, and Michael looks at the tabloid again as he laughs that Lena is so beautiful, and so totally busted! He answers the knock at his door, and grabs the man on the stoop by the lapels to pull him inside as he exclaims, “Barrett, I thought I told you to get the hell out of town!” Michael snaps that he’s supposed to be on a plane to the Cayman Islands, and agrees that driving into a blazing Caribbean sunset, never to be heard from again, was the plan. Barrett tells him plans change, and wonders if Michael is worried about him, or about himself if word gets out that he masterminded this insider trading scam? His hush money didn’t factor in his personal risk! Michael figures he’s putting the squeeze on him, and Barrett agrees he wants $100,000 more to keep his mouth shut. Michael knocks him to ground and snarls that he didn’t just pick him at random—he PhotoShopped him into that frame with Lena because he was already cooking the books at Chandler Enterprises, “Before you start making threats, you need to know that I have what it takes to bury you and keep my hands clean! Do we understand each other?” He shows Barrett out as he says if he keeps his mouth shut, he can have a free ride. But, just so they’re clear, “If you ever get the urge to contact me again, I will make your life a living Hell!”

Previously on All My Children
Adam freaked out to find *sshole hanging around Colby.
Tad wanted Greasy to be a good boy.
David and Anna disagreed about how the other is grieving.
Lena got arrested.

Oh, shock of all shocks. *sshole has a phone attached to his ear. He’s finding out that Lena’s arrest went off without a hitch. He hangs up and answers the very loud banging at his door. Adam is fit to be tied about Lena having snapped up a huge chunk of his stock and is sure *sshole put her up to it.

Lena paces in her cell, ranting about being set up. She’s accused of insider trading with some guy named Bob that works for Adam. Bianca goes to Anna to find out if there’s even any proof. Anna reveals that there’s an extensive electronic trail and an anonymous tip...

*sshole protests that his hands are clean regarding this latest move of Lena’s. Adam angrily shows him the front page of a newspaper. It’s a very unflattering picture of Lena in bed with a balding, flabby guy: Bob. Oh, and there’s bad grammar in the headline to boot. It’s referring to both Lena and Bob, each a CFO of their respective company, right? This is the headline: “CFO’s charged with insider trading.” There shouldn’t be an apostrophe in the pluralizing of “CFO.”

Bianca is crushed upon seeing the Lena/Bob picture. She’s falling for the setup. Anna’s not helping, what with her and the police force actually buying this case being dropped into their laps, all solved for them and wrapped in a tidy little bow. Morons...

Bianca reads Lena the riot act for betraying her yet again. Lena is just gobsmacked that Bianca is so quick to believe the worst about her. She thinks Bianca is pulling an Erica. Running screaming from commitment at the first opportunity.

“I waited across the street until his car pulled away,” says Bob of almost running into Adam. The f***? There was a lapse of like five seconds between the two. Whatever. You know, Bob kinda looks like the character Frank Hart from 9 to 5. You know, the chauvinistic, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot. But wait, that description fits *sshole to a tee. Birds of a feather flock together… and so forth. Bob wishes to renegotiate their deal. *sshole basically kicks his *ss back into submission...

Lena wishes that Bianca were able to trust her and not let *sshole win...

*sshole straightens Bob’s clothing back up before he boots him out the door.

Bianca sniffles that she can’t put herself out on a limb again. Lena is sorry that Bianca can’t get past her insecurities to see the truth.

TODAY ON AMC:

  • Pine Valley needs its own Don Quixote.
  • Lena is behind bars – but it’s not a fantasy/dream sequence.
  • Anna adds her voice to Barbra and Neil’s duet.
  • A drunk walks into a bar.
  • Bianca is blinded by her youth.

At Michael’s - Adam thinks Michael is behind Lena’s purchase of the Chandler Enterprise stock bundle, which SkunkA** denies. Adam shows Michael the paper, which has a picture of Lena and Chandler Enterprises’ CFO Bob Barrett in bed. That’s a…lovely picture. And look, I can tell it’s a fake all the way from here. It seems Barrett has left town, too.

In Jail - Lena and Bianca, so soon?

Lena: "Michael’s behind this, he set me up: I’m willing to bet my last paycheck."

What, all $87 of it?

Bianca: "What did they charge you with Lena?"

Lena: "Abusing my position at Greenlee Investments to buy up Chandler stock for myself and for some Chandler executive, some – some Bob something or rather, I don’t even know who he is."

Anna walks in and she and Bianca have a chat.

Anna: "Well, she’s facing serious charges."

Bianca: " I know but, they’re bogus. Do you have any proof at all?"

Anna: "There’s an extensive e-trail and – I don’t usually pay much attention to this, but we do have an anonymous tip."

I wonder who that could be? Hum, let me think…

Bianca: "Anonymous? It’s Michael Cambias."

100 points to the girl in black. Oh, wait, Anna is wearing black, too. Ok then, 100 points to the girl in black, cleavage and short sleeves.

Bianca: "Well, why would Lena risk a prison sentence for a man that she’s never even met?"

Anna: "Is that what she told you?"

Bianca: "Yeah, and I believe her."

You do? What’s that then, 2 times out of…huh…I’ve lost count.

Anna hands Bianca a lavender folder – lavender? You’re so gay – which contains a picture. I can’t see it! Let me see, dang it. Whatever it is, Bianca doesn’t like it.

Bianca: "I don’t believe this."

Anna: "It was left at the station in this unmarked envelope. I’m really sorry honey, it’s also been sent to the tabloids apparently."

All right: is this not a bit too tidy? The e-trail and a picture? Lena’s not a dilettante and, if she were guilty of any of this, she’d have covered her tracks. Anna strikes me as a pretty sharp woman and I am surprised she’s not even the least bit suspicious.

Anna: "Oh Bianca, I am so sorry. It’s awful when you trust someone and they let you down, time after time. After a while it’s about all you expect."

True, even though you're talking about David. But, well, and I am not saying this because I’m cranky – which is a first, I know - shouldn’t Bianca at least ask Lena about all of this instead of jumping to conclusions right away? She’s believing the worst possible scenario and not giving the other possibilities any thought at all. Stupid dork.

The camera pans between the folder with the picture and Bianca’s left buttock. Is there a link?

Lena: "What did she say? Have they found this man I’m supposed to be making the rounds with?"

Oh, have they ever: Edmund will have to fight him to retain the Furry Man Of The Year title.

Lena: "What’s that?"

Bianca: "It’s proof."

I’m sorry Bianca, can you say that line again? I don’t think you’ve read it with enough self-righteousness.

Lena: "Proof of what?"

Bianca: "Proof of what a fool I was to ever believe you..."

And read that one again, too: not enough self-pity. Thanks, doll.

Bianca: "...to ever believe one word out of your lying mouth."

Bianca throws the picture inside the cell; Lena picks it up and, I think it’s fair to say, is horrified.

Lena: "This is unbelievable. I can’t - that someone would go to these lengths to make it look like – like this is me."

Bianca: "You’re saying it’s not you?"

Lena: "Of course not. This picture has been doctored.  I mean, it’s the work of an expert, but it's still a fake."

Bianca: "It looks pretty real to me."

No s*** genius, isn’t that the point?

Bianca: "I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, not after everything you’ve done."

Lena: "Everything I’ve done, like what? Like breaking it off with Michael, like testifying against him, getting a job, working night and day to prove myself worthy of your love, of your forgiveness? You think I would throw all that away to sleep with some man for money?"

Ouch and – ouch. Lena has a very clear picture of how Bianca sees her and it’s pretty revolting, isn’t it?

Bianca: "Lena, more than anything I wanted to believe that love was the right thing for us. For me."

Whuh? First, what is that sentence and, second, you did? When?

Bianca: "And then Anna shows me a picture…"

Lena: "Anna shows you a picture of me in bed with some man, in this ridiculous pose, this computer-generated lie, and you see what you want to see: the old me, the manipulator, the liar who’s out to make a fool of you."

And I am giggling again at how Lena says "some man" as if she were picturing herself in bed with Icarus. Or, worse yet, Charon.

Lena: "You’ve often told me how terrified Erica is of love, how scared she is of affection, of intimacy, how impossible it is for her to give herself completely to anyone."

Bianca: "What does that have to do with me?

Lena: "You’re doing the same thing: you’re throwing away what we have for the sake of a lie. To be honest, I think you’re doing this with a sigh of relief."

Bianca: "You couldn’t be more wrong."

Really? I think she’s right on target. Bianca took her time before she gave Lena a second chance because she wanted some sort of sign she could trust her but, it seems to me, she believes this purported sign a whole lot more - and that speaks of predisposition, does it not?

Lena: "I wish I were. Look, at least you don’t have to worry about becoming like your mother anymore: it’s already happened."

Ah, Lena? The line you’ve just crossed? It’s 10 yards behind you.

Bianca is crying, I think, but I don’t care. It’s too bad that she believes Lena has betrayed her once more and I’m sure it feels terrible but, well, she could try to think things through for once. Feh.

Bianca: "I am nothing like my mother, Lena. If I were, then I would never have put myself out there and taken a second chance on love."

You’re 19! 19! What are you talking about????

Bianca: "I’m sorry Lena, I can’t do this again."

Lena: "I’m sorry, too. I’m sorry that you could not see past your fear and allow yourself to be happy. And you know what, before this I’d have blamed myself but I learned something this past hour that I didn’t see before: no matter how much you say you want to be loved, the only thing stopping you – is you."

And that’s the nail on the coffin – for today anyway. I’m not even clear on who dumped whom: are you?

TOMORROW ON AMC: Mary tells Jack that Erica knows her secret and is afraid she will share it with him; Greenlee knows a secret that she will use to disarm Erica; Reggie kisses the girl with whom he’s been working.

COMMENTARIES

Commentary by "C"
Let's take a minute to examine just how stupid this latest little twist in the storyline is, shall we? Lena was "abusing her position"? Woody hired her as a financial analyst: in other words, her job involves analyzing the economic performance of companies and industries to assess current trends and develop forecasts and make recommendations to buy or sell a particular investment or security. He mentioned to Greenlee that he'd "just lost an analyst", which doesn't exactly sound like a senior position (in the typical investment firm, only senior analysts make the actual decisions to buy or sell for the company or client). Which makes her a fairly low man on the totem pole, with relatively little power and influence to abuse.

This is the woman who, TPTB would have us believe [see rant from the 06/23/03 commentary], was moonlighting as a waitress to be able to afford keeping her mom in Chicago. Financial analysts do make decent money (a couple of years ago, the median income was around $52,000, with top analysts pulling in over $100,000, not including bonuses), but unless the customers at SOS are the most generous tippers in the world, it's hard to see how she had anything left over with which to buy significant chunks of Chandler stock. So presumably the cops' working theory is that Lena seduced CFOBob out of desperation and got him to bankroll her.

It isn't illegal to buy stock, of course. It's not even illegal for officers, directors or other corporate insiders to buy or sell stock in their own companies, as long as they report their trades to the SEC [see below]. But unless it can be proven that CFOBob breached his fiduciary duty -- if, for example, he had acted on and benefited from nonpublic information about confidential corporate developments at Chandler -- it would be very difficult indeed to bring a case against him, much less Lena.

And when, exactly, is Lena supposed to have cooked all this up? She's only been working for Woody since the 06/09/03 episode, and she gets arrested on 06/24/03. It's never safe to presume that PV Time corresponds to real time, but at most it's been only a few weeks. Boy, that sneaky HPF's a pretty quick worker, ain't she?

In short, it's preposterous -- both from a writing standpoint and also from that of the PVPD's purported case.

And Pssst! Hey, Anna? Insider trading is prosecuted by the SEC. Feds, not local. It takes months and months and months to build a case; having a suspect clumsily dragged into the clink on the basis of an anonymous tip and a Photoshopped picture would get it tossed out before you could say "Anna Devane is the Worst Police Chief Ever." Yes, yes, Finola Hughes is hot and I understand from my soap devotee friends that Anna used to be really cool -- a spy and all-around kick-a** babe; unfortunately, her character and brains seem not to have survived the transition from GH. At least she pairs up well with Jackson Montgomery, The Worst DA Ever. And I do like her femmey-butch wardrobe; the black-blazer-over-white-T-shirt look she's working today suits her nicely.

Yes, I do visual body scans of everyone, Bianca. It's part of being an officer of the law

PARODY

Lena parts are indicated in red for those who only want a Lena fix

Adam confronted Michael about the insider trading scandal.
Adam: One of my top executives was caught in bed with Lena and she's been buying stock in my company. Did you have something to do with this?
Michael: Why would you suspect me?
Adam: All bad things in this town happen either because of you or David Hayward and I know he was busy beating up Jamie Martin. Besides, Lena was your girlfriend.
Michael: I had nothing to do with it. I would never betray you. You're like a father to me.
Adam: You're working to bring your father's company down.
Michael: Oh. I was hoping you wouldn't remember that. But I'm not behind this whole thing. I don't even know that Bob guy.
Adam: Then I guess I'll be going.
Michael: Goodbye. And try not to trip over Bob on your way out.
Bob: Hello Michael. I came by to blackmail you.
Michael: Not a wise move. I know the Vulcan death grip.
Bob: Owwww!
Michael: Now leave before someone sees you. I'd hate to develop a bad reputation in this town. Those message board people might start calling for my execution.

Bianca went to see Lena in jail.
Bianca: How could you arrest Lena?
Anna: It was easy. The cops found her, put the handcuffs on her and...
Bianca: That's not what I meant. She didn't do anything wrong.
Anna: We have an electronic trail showing how she bought the stock.
Bianca: It's a fake.
Anna: We have a tip from a reliable source.
Bianca: It's a fake.
Anna: We have a picture of her in bed with Bob from Chandler Enterprises.
Bianca: Lock her up and throw away the key.
Lena: What's wrong?
Bianca: Anna showed me this crucial piece of evidence. It's you in bed with Bob from Chandler Enterprises.
Lena: I don't believe it.
Bianca: That someone took your picture while you were in bed with him?
Lena: No. That Anna just gave you a key piece of evidence.
Bianca: Yeah. Anna's a nice lady but she's not a very good cop. How do you explain this picture?
Lena: I shouldn't have to. Anyone with the right software and a little computer knowledge could fake a picture like this. You should have been able to figure that out.
Bianca: I can't trust you Lena.
Lena: Not being able to trust is what your mother has programmed you for since you were a little girl.
Bianca: Actually my mother programmed me to marry Prince William since I was a little girl. I think she may have finally given up on that.
Lena: If you don't trust me then you're just like Erica - except of course that you're gay. And taller.

Reggie and Joanie were at the Habitat House.
Reggie: Hi Joanie.
Joanie: Hi Reggie.
Joanie's dad: There'll be none of that you too. You must work in complete silence. I won't have my daughter corrupted. Joanie, there seem to be some supplies missing from the site. I hope that evil black market construction supply ring hasn't penetrated this project.
Joanie: Reggie, do you know anything about the supplies?
Reggie: Why would you ask me that?
Joanie: Because I don't know anything about them and we're building this house all by ourselves.

A crowd gathered at BJ's for breakfast.
Brooke: So what are your plans for the summer Jamie?
Jamie: It's going to be a great summer. Last year I was at mute camp but this year things are going to be different. I'm going to have sex with as many girls as possible.
Brooke: That's nice dear. Where did you get that idea?
Jamie: From Dad. He said he thought Jamie the Cad has a nice ring to it.
Doug: Howsh my little girl? Can you bring you're daddy a nishe cold beer with hish shcrambled eggs?
Laurie: Oh no. Not again. This is so humiliating.
Brooke: I know what you're going through Laurie. Years ago when I still had storylines I was married to an alcoholic.
Laurie: I never knew that.
Brooke: That I was married to an alcoholic?
Laurie: No, that you ever had storylines.
Brooke: Don't get snippy with me young lady. At least I haven't been written out.

Later Laurie went home.
Laurie: Dad, you have to stop drinking now. I'm going to see to it.
Dad: What'sh going on?
Laurie: This is an intervention - when your loved ones gather around and force you to confront your addictions. Of course we're not really connected to anyone in town so I brought these people instead.
Jamie: I'm here for Laurie's sake.
Tad: I'm here for Jamie's sake.
Brooke: I'm here for the screen time. I take what I can get these days.

QUOTES

Adam: You and Ms. Kundera have been partners in bed and out. The plan was to take down Enchantment.
Michael: Yes, and as you'll recall, Lena turned on me when she turned state's evidence. She also switched her romantic focus to Bianca Montgomery.
Adam: Yes, well, the -- the course of true love has run amok.

Michael: She certainly looks doable.

Michael: When it comes to cash, Lena can be insatiable.
Adam: Bianca Montgomery is worth a small fortune.
Michael: Yeah, well, I can only surmise that Erica made mama lion noises when Lena tried to get too close, snuggled up too tight to Bianca’s trust fund. I guess she just moved on to more lucrative pastures.

Michael: Lena's type is anybody who can bankroll a high life. I'm just surprised she was stupid enough to get caught with her panties down.
Adam: How do you explain that?
Michael: Well, I don't know. Maybe walking the other side of the street with Bianca made her reckless.

Anna: It's awful when you trust someone and they let you down time after time. After a while, it's about all you expect.

Bianca: It looks pretty real to me.

You think I would throw that away to sleep with some man for money? Maybe I'm the fool to have ever believed in you.

Lena: You're throwing away what we have for the sake of a lie, and to be honest, I think you're doing it with a sigh of relief.
Lena: At least you don't have to worry about becoming like your mother anymore. It's already happened.

Lena: Bianca, I want you to trust what we have. I want you to believe in that something that keeps drawing us back. Please, don't let Michael win this again. Bianca, you must trust me one more time.

[PV jail. I'm kind of digging the stainless steel sink mounted on the wall in Lena's cell. Well, except for the separate hot and cold taps, because that's just evil and wrong, but otherwise I could see one of those in my laundry room]
Lena: [paces, rubbing the back of her head] Michael's behind this, he set me up. [absently shakes her pointed index finger] I'm willing to bet my last paycheck. [places hands on hips]
Bianca: What did they charge you with, Lena?
[Anna walks by in the background carrying some papers]
Lena: [sarcastically, with big vigorous arm gestures] I was abusing my position at Greenlee Investments to buy up Chandler stock for myself a-and some Chandler executive, some, some... Bob [makes a cute squinched face] something or other, I-I don't even know who he is.
Bianca: [looks over her shoulder at Anna, who's talking to a guard] Look, I'm gonna talk to Anna, I'm gonna see what's going on. [walks over to Anna]
Lena: Okay.
Bianca: Anna --
Anna: [turns to Binks] Have you been here all night?
Bianca: Yeah. Look, Lena's really freaked out about this and frankly, so am I.
Anna: Well, she's facing serious charges.
Bianca: I know but... they're bogus. D-do you have any proof at all?
Anna: There's an extensive e-trail. And I don't usually pay much attention to this but we do have an anonymous tip.
Bianca: [voice dripping with all the disbelief this deserves] Anonymous? [drops to a more normal, softer tone of voice] It's Michael Cambias. Look, Lena is certain that Michael is behind this. Have you ever talked to him? Have you talked to this, this CFO, this Chandler guy --
Anna: Bob Barrett?
Bianca: Yeah.
Anna: He's implicated here also.
Bianca: Well, why would Lena risk a prison sentence for a man that she's never even met?
Anna: Is that what she told you?
Bianca: Yeah. And I believe her.
Anna: [takes a deep breath] Well, if she's never met him, I don't know how you explain this. [hands Binks a large envelope. Binks takes out a picture and stares at it for a long moment, then gives Anna a shocked look. OT: we also get a nice closeup of her bracelet, which is elaborately chased with some complicated but subtle pattern, and I totally want it]

***** (clip e) [Anna gives Bianca the photo of Lena and Bob (no Lena)]

[Closeup of Binks' hand holding a large photo of a (presumably) nekkid Lena cuddling up to a doughy balding mustachioed (also presumably) nekkid middleaged guy in bed. Cut to JailbirdLena pacing in her cell, momentarily curious about what Binks is looking at. Track to closeup of Binks]
Bianca: I don't believe this.
Anna: [reaching for the photo] Yeah, it was left at the station in this unmarked envelope. [slides photo back into envelope] I'm really sorry, honey, it's also been sent to the tabloids, apparently. [And this is what passes for incontrovertible evidence in Pine Valley]
Bianca: [closes eyes] And, and that --
Anna: That's Bob Barrett, CFO of Chandler Enterprises. And Lena says she doesn't know him?
Bianca: [exhales, evading the question] Um, has he been arrested too?
Anna: There's an APB out on him. And when he's found he will be charged along with Ms. Kundera as coconspiritors in insider trading.
Bianca: [shaking her head in disbelief] She told me... she promised no more lies.
Anna: [moves toward Binks with open arms, as if to hug her] Oh, Bianca, I'm so sorry. [Binks sidesteps Anna and comes to a stop so that she's in the foreground with her back to Anna, her hand going to her mouth and then curling loosely in a fist] It's awful when you trust someone and... [Binks looks to be on the verge of tears] they let you down [Binks' hand goes to her throat] time after time. [Binks takes a deep breath] After a while it's about all you expect.

***** (clip g) [Bianca believes that Lena is lying about Bob and Lena gets angry]

[Closeup of photo in Binks' hand, which she's holding down at her side as she slowly walks toward Lena's cell. Track up to Lena, who's sitting on the bed]
Lena: [spreads arms, palms up] What did she say? [stands] Have they found this man I'm supposed to be making a run with?
Bianca: No. [long look at photo, then raises her head to look at Lena] They haven't found him yet.
Lena: [small motion indicating photo] What's that?
Bianca: [looks down] It's proof. [rather coldly]
Lena: Proof of what?
Bianca: Proof of what a fool I was to ever believe [finally looks up at Lena again] you. To ever believe one word out of your [tosses photo through bars of cell] lying mouth.
Lena: [bends to pick up the photo from the floor and stares at it in horror, turning her back to Binks] Bianca, where did you get this ?
Bianca: From Anna. When I asked her if she had any evidence that you were in bed with the Chandler CFO.
Lena: [looks closer] This is unbelievable. [turns slowly toward Binks, still examining the photo] Someone would go to these lengths to make it look like, look like this is me.
Bianca: Are you saying it's not you?
Lena: Well, of course not. This picture's been doctored, I mean, it's, it's the work of an expert but... it's still a fake.
Bianca: I-I it looks pretty real to me.
Lena: [takes a step forward, still looking at the picture; animatedly] No, look, if you look closer you can see that -- [stops and sees Binks' disgusted expression. Long deer-in-headlights stare; she looks down, then drops the hand holding the photo, all the fight gone out of her as though she'd been sucker-punched. Quietly, looking directly at Binks] If you look closer you'll see that once again I've lied to you and led you on.
Bianca: [holding back angry tears] I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Not after everything you've done.
Lena: [visibly hurt] Everything I've done? Like... like what, like [deep breath] breaking it off with Michael, like testifying against him, getting a job working night and day to prove myself worthy of your love, of your forgiveness? Y-you think I would throw that away to sleep with some man, for money? [Binks stares, accusingly silent. Lena looks at Binks as if seeing her for the first time -- and maybe it is: for once she's neither flirting with nor manipulating nor projecting a romantic ideal onto Bianca. And in this scene and the following ones, it's the first time she's ever turned the full force of her considerable powers of observation and analysis on Binks, which is rather eye-opening for both of them] Maybe I'm the fool, to have ever believed in you.

***** (clip a) {Previously on AMC: Lena is arrested]

Previously on "All My Children"
Adam: Get your hands off my daughter.
Tad: We just agreed. You're not going to follow my example, right?
David: You just go on like Leora never existed.
Anna: You carry on with the love that that little baby gave us.
[amc030625a-inc4 starts]
Officer: Are you Lena Kundera?
Lena: Yes. Is there a problem?
Officer: I'm afraid so. You're under arrest.
[amc030625a-inc4 ends]

***** (clip b) [Adam is mad at Michael because Lena is implicated in stealing Chandler stock (no Lena)]

[amc030625b starts]
Michael: Yeah, I understand that Lena Kundera was arrested and booked last night. Uh-huh. And her arraignment is set for today. Well, thank you very much, Sergeant.
[pounding on door]
Adam: See the headlines?
Michael: No. I haven't had a chance. Why?
Adam: D*** it! I hired you to be a viper in your father's nest, not Chandler Enterprises'.
Michael: Adam, you've lost me.
Adam: Someone just snapped up a huge block of Chandler stock. That someone was named Lena Kundera. Doing your dirty work. Deny it! I dare you.

***** (clip c) [Lena accuses Michael of setting her up]

[amc030625c starts]
Lena: Michael's behind this. He set me up. I'm willing to bet my last paycheck.
Bianca: What did they charge you with, Lena?
Lena: With abusing my position at the Greenlee Investments to buy up Chandler stock for myself and some Chandler executives, some Bob something or other. I don't know who he is.
Bianca: Well, I'm going to talk to Anna and see what's going on. Anna
Anna: Have you been here all night?
Bianca: Yeah. Look, Lena’s really freaked out about this, and, frankly, so am I.
Anna: Well, she's facing serious charges.
Bianca: I know, but they're bogus. Do you have any proof at all?
Anna: There's an extensive e-trail. And I don't usually pay much attention to this, but we do have an anonymous tip.
Bianca: Anonymous? It's Michael Cambias. Look, Lena is certain that Michael is behind this. Have you ever talked to him? Have you talked to this C.F.O., this Chandler guy?
Anna: Bob Barrett?
Bianca: Yeah.
Anna: He's implicated here also.
Bianca: Well, why would Lena risk a prison sentence for a man that she's never even met?
Anna: Is that what she told you?
Bianca: Yeah, and I believe her.
Anna: Well, if she's never met him, I don't know how you explain this.

***** (clip d) [Adam does not believe that Michael and Lena are not allied (no Lena)]

Adam: The terms of our deal were clear-cut.
Michael: Yeah. Absolutely. [amc030625d-inc starts] You brought me on to help divest my father of Cambias Industries.
Adam: Then explain this stock purchase, which is the first phase in the takeover of my company.
Michael: Adam, my hands are clean.
Adam: Really?
Michael: Yes.
Adam: Then how did this happen?
Michael: Well, I don't know. I suppose that Lena got greedy, which isn't that surprising.
Adam: That's your excuse? That's your defense?
Michael: Well, I was hoping I wouldn't need a defense. If Lena was stockpiling shares of Chandler Enterprises, she did it without my knowledge or my help.
Adam: Really?
Michael: Oh. So you don't believe me.
Michael: Isn't this your C.F.O., Bob Barrett?
Adam: Oh, yes, and what appears to be a very compliant Lena.
Michael: Oh, well, she certainly looks doable.
Adam: How do you explain that?
Michael: Well, when it comes to cash, Lena can be insatiable.
Adam: And you know nothing about Lena’s business dealings?
Michael: Adam, look, you have done something that even my own father refused to do. You gave me a second chance to prove myself. Do you know how much that means to me? I would never turn the tables to try and put a stranglehold on Chandler Enterprises -- never.
Adam: I only wish Bob Barrett shared your sense of loyalty.
Michael: Well, maybe if you talk to him.
Adam: Talk to him? I'd strangle him if I could find him.
Michael: Well, you're telling me the guy skipped town?
Adam: Yeah, so it would appear. So the two of you have not decided to go into business together?
Michael: Oh, come on. What, me and Bob Barrett? Are you kidding me, Adam? Please. I have barely met the guy. I think I might have met him once at the Chandler board meeting.
Adam: And you both just happened to be Lena’s type?
Michael: Lena's type is anybody who can bankroll a high life. I'm just surprised she was stupid enough to get caught with her panties down.
Adam: How do you explain that?
Michael: Well, I don't know. Maybe walking the other side of the street with Bianca made her reckless.
Adam: Reckless enough to land in jail?

***** (clip e) [Anna gives Bianca the photo of Lena and Bob (no Lena)]

[amc030625e starts]
Bianca: I don't believe this.
Anna: Yeah, it was left at the station in this unmarked envelope. I'm really sorry, honey. It's also been sent to the tabloids, apparently.
Bianca: And that --
Anna: That's Bob Barrett, C.F.O. of Chandler Enterprises. And Lena says she doesn't know him?
Bianca: Has he been arrested, too?
Anna: There's an A.P.B. out on him, and when he's found, he will be charged along with Ms. Kundera as co-conspirators in insider trading.
Bianca: She told me -- she promised no more lies.
Anna: Oh, Bianca, I'm so sorry. It's awful when you trust someone and they let you down time after time. After a while, it's about all you expect.

***** (clip f) [Adam and Michael dscuss Lena; Bob visits Michael (no Lena)]

Michael: Lena's in jail, exactly where she belongs.
[amc030625f-inc starts]
Adam: You wouldn't be contemplating anything foolish, would you?
Michael: Such as?
Adam: Such as making her bail and getting a couple of first-class tickets to any country without an extradition treaty?
Michael: Adam, when are you going to get that I'm on your side? What do I have to do to prove this to you?
Adam: We'll have to take that up back at the office. Meanwhile, I have to do some major control, damage control, with a lot of very nervous stockholders.
Michael: Right, well, I'll get busy on a press release.
Adam: Yeah, you do that. And try to find something -- think of something about Lena that might help the police track down Mr. Barrett.
Michael: Well, if anything should surface, you'll be the first to know. Was there something else?
Adam: Yeah, something else. I just can't quite put my finger on it. Yet.
Michael: Ah, Lena. So beautiful, so totally busted.
[knock on door]
Michael: Barrett, I thought I told you to get the h*** out of town.

***** (clip g) [Bianca believes that Lena is lying about Bob and Lena gets angry]

[amc030625g starts]
Lena: What did she say? Have they found this man I’m supposed to be making a run with?
Bianca: No. They haven't found him yet.
Lena: What's that?
Bianca: It's proof.
Lena: Proof of what?
Bianca: Proof of what a fool I was to ever believe you, to ever believe one word out of your lying mouth.
Lena: Bianca, where did you get this?
Bianca: From Anna, when I asked her if she had any evidence that you were in bed with the Chandler C.F.O.
Lena: This is unbelievable that someone would go to these lengths to make it look like this is me.
Bianca: You're saying it's not you?
Lena: Of course not. This picture has been doctored. I mean, it's the work of an expert, but it's still a fake.
Bianca: It looks pretty real to me.
Lena: No, no. Look, if you look closer, you can see that -- if you look closer, you'll see that once again I’ve lied to you and led you on.
Bianca: I guess I shouldn't be surprised, not after everything you've done.
Lena: Everything I’ve done? Like -- like what? Like breaking it off with Michael, like testifying against him, getting a job, working night and day to prove myself worthy of your love or your forgiveness? You think I would throw that away to sleep with some man for money? Maybe I'm the fool to have ever believed in you.

***** (clip h) [Lena tells Bianca she has turned into her mother]

[amc030625h starts]
Bianca: Lena, more than anything I wanted to believe that love was the right thing for us, for me. And then Anna shows me --
Lena: Anna shows you a picture of me in bed with some man. This ridiculous pose, this computer-generated lie. And you see what you want to see -- the old me, the manipulator, the liar who's out to make a fool of you. Bianca, you're obviously blinded by what happened in the past. You can't see what you know is the truth -- that I would sooner die than see you suffer because of me.
Bianca: That's the truth, Lena. That picture is the truth.
Lena: What if I were to prove that it's not? Huh? Would that make a difference? No. You've already made up your mind, because given the choice, you choose to believe the worst of me. Well, it's a safe, familiar, predictable choice. And I think deep down you actually need to believe that I cheated on you.
Bianca: Oh, you are so wrong.
Lena: Well, this is what you wanted. This is what you've been waiting for. This is what your mother has been drilling into you ever since you've been old enough to hold your hand to someone else.
Bianca: Yeah, what's that?
Lena: No one will ever love you like your mother loves you.
Bianca: I guess she's right.
Lena: I guess maybe you're more like her than you care to admit.
Bianca: What is that supposed to mean?
Lena: You've often told me how terrified Erica is of love, how scared she is of affection, of intimacy, how impossible it is for her to give herself completely to anyone.
Bianca: What does that have to do with me?
Lena: Well, you're obviously doing the same thing. You're throwing away what we have for the sake of a lie, and to be honest, I think you're doing it with a sigh of relief.
Bianca: You couldn't be more wrong.
Lena: I wish I were. Look, at least you don't have to worry about becoming like your mother anymore. It's already happened.

***** (clip i) [Bob asks Michael for more money to implicate Lena]

[amc030625i starts]
Michael: Have you completely lost your mind showing up here, Barrett?
Barrett: Nobody saw me.
Michael: You just missed running into Adam.
Barrett: I waited across the street till his car pulled away.
Michael: Oh, good, good, good. Well, you know, if he'd seen you, you'd be under arrest right now. You're supposed to be on a plane to the Cayman Islands.
Barrett: Yeah, driving into a blazing Caribbean sunset, never to be heard from again.
Michael: Uh-huh, that was the plan.
Barrett: The plan's changed, Michael.
Michael: Yeah, well, I want you to get out of here right now.
Barrett: What, are you worried about me or what will happen to you if word gets out that you masterminded this insider trading scam?
Michael: Well, I paid you to keep your mouth shut.
Barrett: Your hush money didn't factor in my personal risk.
Michael: I see. So you're putting the squeeze on me. Is that it?
Barrett: Look, you want me to keep my lips zipped, I need more incentive -- money to make me forget that you're running this fraud to destroy Lena Kundera's credibility so that her testimony against you won't carry weight. And that little piece of memory lapse should cost about, oh, what, 100 grand? Easy.
Michael: Hmm.
Barrett: You get me the money.
Michael: Ok -- you listen to me. Ok? I didn't just pick you at random. I photo-shopped you into that frame with Lena because you were already cooking the books at Chandler Enterprises, lining your own pockets. So you just remember, before you start leaning on me and making threats, you need to know that I have what it takes to bury you and keep my hands clean. Do we understand each other?

***** (clip j) [Lena asks for Bianca's trust]

[amc030625j starts]
Bianca: I am nothing like my mother, Lena. If I were, then I would never have put myself out there and taken a second chance on love.
Lena: Yes, that's right. You did. You put yourself out there in spite of everything that I did to you. You took me back because you decided we were worth a second chance, a chance you're prepared to bail on the moment anything goes wrong.
Bianca: God, can you blame me?
Lena: No. Bianca, I don't blame you. If we were to trade places, I doubt I could be as forgiving as you've been, but the point is you came through for us because you obviously felt there's something here worth saving.
Bianca: I don't know what you want from me.
Lena: Bianca, I want you to trust what we have. I want you to believe in that something that keeps drawing us back. Please, don't let Michael win this again. Bianca, you must trust me one more time.

***** (clip k) [Michael sends Bob off (no Lena)]

Michael: So there you go, Bob. You keep your mouth shut and you can have a free ride, hmm? Oh, and [amc030625k-inc starts] just so we're clear, if you ever get the urge to contact me again, I will turn up the heat in your tropical paradise and make your life a living hell, ok?

***** (clip l) [Bianca dumps Lena for the 3rd time]

[amc030625l starts]
Bianca: I'm sorry, Lena. I can't do this again.
Lena: I'm sorry, too. I'm sorry that you couldn't see past your fear and allow yourself to be happy. And, you know, before this, I would blame myself, but I learned something this past hour that I didn't see before. No matter how much you say you want to be loved, the only thing stopping you is you.
