Flashbacks are shown from last season's "Hel and Highwater" two-parter, when Cleo and Company descended to the bottom of the ocean and met Granger and his underwater colony. While there, Cleo was for a short time in close connection with a captive Bailey.

Cleo, Hel and Sarge emerge aboveground into the bright sunlight. They are on a peace mission, but are worried that the Baileys might not understand it as such. They see some Baileys and approach them. They show the Baileys a peace offering -- it's a hologram of one of the Baileys' energy pods. The Baileys make some muttering noises. Cleo is the only one who understands what they are saying. Voice says that Cleo must have retained a link with them from her previous empathic contact. Cleo relays the message that the Baileys want their pod back. Hel says that they need to negotiate a cease-fire first, but the Baileys start blasting at them. Sarge and Cleo are separated from Hel, who yells at them to get away. Sarge practically throws Cleo into the escape shaft and then turns to help Hel, but they are separated by a firestorm of blasting. With a despairing look, Sarge jumps into the shaft just before an explosion obliterates it. Hel sees that she will not be able to escape.

Act I

Hel manages to get into the trees, but the Baileys continue to track her. Voice says that they apparently want to capture her alive. Hel says she just needs another way home, since the shaft entrance was destroyed. Voice says there is another escape shaft about 2 kilometers away. But she only has 10 minutes til her shields will fail. The Baileys discharge several betrayers, who set out into the trees after Hel.

Back at the lab, Sarge says she is going back up to the surface to help Hel. Cleo says they really need a plan first. Mauser says perhaps they can help Hel get to an escape shaft. He unveils a strange-looking vehicle -- a 23rd century shaft racer. The vehicle was apparently outlawed some time ago. Cleo says it reminds her of Maggie, her '66 Mustang. She wants to know what powers the racer, and Mauser points to the Bailey energy pod. Cleo says she is still getting weird vibes from the pod.

Aboveground, Hel fights one of the betrayers.

Sarge and Cleo take off in the shaft racer. Cleo: "How come you get to drive?" Sarge just smiles. Cleo: "You're not automatically better at everything. I played Nintendo." They start to go faster up the shaft. Cleo and Sarge are both getting a rush from the speed.

Act II

Hel is now fighting several betrayers at once.

Sarge and Cleo break through the surface and get a lock on Hel's position. Sarge kicks in the thrusters and they take off. Two Baileys appear and give chase. When the Baileys start to fire at them, Sarge can't get the racer to respond so that she can outmaneuver them. Cleo tries to help by talking to the racer, telling it not to listen to bad Sarge screaming at it.

Hel eludes the betrayers and gets to within a few hundred meters of an escape shaft. She wonders aloud why they want to take back the surface when all she sees there is mud and mosquitoes.

The racer still isn't responding to Sarge. The control jerks out of her hands and rotates toward Cleo, as if it wants her to drive. Cleo takes the wheel and the racer responds perfectly. Cleo thinks that she can drive the racer because of the psychic connection between her and the energy pod. She is able to elude the Baileys and praises the racer for being a good girl.

Hel approaches the shaft pursued by the betrayers. A couple of Baileys also appear and join in the chase. Hel is finally caught by the betrayers and dragged toward one of the Baileys. Cleo and Sarge roar onto the scene in their racer. Sarge uses the racer's built-in weaponry to take out the betrayers one by one. Hel makes it to the racer and jumps in, giving Cleo and Sarge an amazed look: "Cleo is driving?" They zoom away, with the Baileys in close pursuit. Hel and Sarge use the racer's weapons to fire back at the Baileys. Cleo feels "the need for speed", and the racer gives it to her. They get to the shaft entrance and dive down into it. The Baileys chasing them collide with each other and explode.

Back at the lab, Mauser determines that Hel has some cuts and bruises, but is not badly hurt. She thanks Sarge and Cleo for coming to her rescue, but wants to know how Cleo was able to fly like that. Cleo: "Well, let me tell you about that. There is a sacred bond between a woman and her ride. You know what I'm saying?" Hel and Sarge just look at her with puzzled expressions and Cleo adds, "Maybe not." But Sarge goes over to the racer and whispers, "You did a good job."
