“Mercenary” Episode 38/301 [TEASER] [Caption: Prison ship, _Enyalios_] Men’s Voices: “Move it! Move it!” “Don’t leave us down here!” “We’ll drown like rats!” “Shut up, or I’ll toss you overboard! You stay chained!” Derq: “We’re never gonna make it to Sparta!” H: “We’ll make! You murdered a man. You _will_ stand trial for that.” Derq: “You are a fool! The seas are filled-- with pirates. If the storm doesn’t kill us, they will.” H: “We’ll see.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- H: “So much for pirates.” Derq: “Hercules! Unchain me! We’re gonna capsize!” H: “Just hold on! Whoa-a-a!” Derq: “If the boat sinks-- I’m gonna go down with it!” H: “We’ll all go down!” Derq: “You won’t! You’re not chained to it! Cut me loose!” Man’s Voice: “We’re going down! Every man for himself!” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “Thanks for saving me.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- [ACT I] H: “‘Thanks for saving me.’” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “Don’t worry. It’s just a tree stump. But you’re wise to be careful. Now, I figure we’re even.” H: “How do you figure that?” Derq: “You saved my life on the boat-- and I didn’t kill you on the beach.” H: “Aw, I suppose I should thank you.” Derq: “If I wanted you dead-- you wouldn’t be here.” H: “Well, I’m here now.” Derq: “Like I said-- we’re even. But if you keep on comin’ after me-- I will kill you.” Derq’s Voice: I’m warning you! Don’t-- follow me!” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Pirates [Pirs]’ Voices: “Think anyone made it off the prison ship?!” “Spread out! Look for survivors!” “Search the beach! Maybe the gold washed ashore!” Sordis [Sor]: “Tracks-- human tracks.” A Pir: “Someone was tryin’ to cover them.” Pir’s Voice: “Try over there!” Sor: “Why bother? Unless the gold was on the prison ship, like you said.” Red: “Over here! Tracks! I see tracks! Here! This way!” A Pir: “There are only two sets ’a tracks.” Sor: “The gold is either at the bottom of the ocean-- or those two buried it.” A Pir: “What if they don’t want to tell us?” Sor: “Then we will just have to persuade them.” Pir’s Voice: “What’s over there?!” Sor: [Laughs] ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- [Fight] H: “Your camoulflage needs a little work.” Derq: “Doesn’t matter. You’re still a dead man. You’re good, Hercules, even with one arm. But are you good enough?” H: [Yells] Derq: “Here, let me help.” H: “Hah! Ah-h! A-h-h-h! No-o-o-o-o-o-o-o! Ah-h! Ah!” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- [ACT II] Derq: “That’s a dried-up well you’re in. You better start digging.” H: “We’d find water a lot quicker-- if you were down here helping me!” Derq [Laughs]: “True, very true-- but I need my rest.” H: “Big eggs. Looks like we’re not alone.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- H: “Have a nice nap?” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “Look, the only way we’re gonna get off this island-- is if we work together.” H: “Oh, yeah-- now you wanna work together.” H’s Voice: “Just keep digging.” Derq: “I could dig a lot faster if my arms were untied.” H’s Voice: “Yeah, I suppose you could.” Derq: “What if I promise not to escape?” H: “I remember the last time I gave you a break. Besides-- I like knowing where you are.” Derq: “Your arm’s swelling? It’s probably infected. You could use my help fixing it.” H: “I can handle it myself.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- A Pir: “Should we bury him?” Sor: “Why waste the effort? You two-- go on ahead. Split up if you have to, but find water. You! Back to the ship. Bring water!” Pir’s Voice: “Yes, sir.” A Pir: “Doubt if these two have found water, either. They must be getting weaker.” Sor: “Let us hope they do not die before they tell us where they hid the gold.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “I should have become a farmer like my father.” H’s: “Then why didn’t you?” Derq: “I didn’t have his touch for the soil.” H: “That’s too bad. You wouldn’t be here now.” Derq: “I guess it’s like-- every son. You either wanna be just _like_ your father or just the opposite.” H: “So you became-- a killer.” Derq: “No-- not a first. Soldiering was just the thing to get me the furthest away from that farm.” H: “So, you hated your father that much?” Derq: “No, I-- I loved him. I just wanted to go on my own. Water! Water! I found water! I hit water!” H: “Salt.” Derq: “I’ve been all over the east side of this island-- and there’s no safe water to be found!” H: “Then, we’ll have to head west.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “Oh, I know he didn’t get up there without legs.” H: “No-- my guess is he-- left them with whatever was chasing him.” Derq: “We’ve been on this island for two days. I haven’t seen anything big enough to do that.” H: “Sometimes-- it’s what you can’t see-- that can hurt you the most. Remember those-- strange-looking pods we saw in the well?” Derq: “Yeah, what about ‘em?” H: “I think they were egg sacs.” Derq: “Wow, they were huge.” H: “I know.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “Well, oh great monster killer-- what are our choices?” H: “There’s no water-- no choices. We keep heading west.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- A Pir: “Sordis. No gold buried down here.” Sor: “Ah-h-h-h-h!” Pir’s Voice: “Pull him up.” Sor: “They could not have carried it this far. If it survived the storm-- it’s back where they landed. Don’t worry-- we’ll get them to tell us.” A Pir: “That salt water couldn’t ’a done ‘em any good. You think we’re gaining on them?” Sor: “they’re dragging their feet. They have to be on their last legs. Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h!” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “How’s that arm?” H: “You shut up and keep moving.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- [Fight] Derq: “Get up!” H: “You fool. You should be saving your strength.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- [ACT III] Derq: “What was that?!” H: “I have no idea. Over here!” Derq: “Where’d it go?” H [Whispers]: “Derq. The shell.” Derq: “I guess it doesn’t care much for shells.” H: “Yeah-- or burrowing through stone.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- H: “You’re pretty good at that. You must have had some practice.” Derq: “When you’re a soldier, you learn. Tell me somethin’. Why do you keep saving me? The reward’s the same whether my head’s in a bag or not.” H: “I told you before-- I’m not interested in the money.” Derq: “In what, then? Justice? [Laughs] You can’t really believe that I’ll get justice.” H: “You should have thought of that before you killed Lycus.” Derq: “I doubt that Lycus gave it a thought when he killed the sons of the woman that hired me.” H: “I’ve known Lycus a long time. I’ve never known him to kill anyone.” Derq: “When was the last time you saw Lycus? There’s a family in Attica without any male heirs because of him” H: “All I know-- is that the courts decide guilt and punishment-- not mercenaries.” Derq: “Well, the courts didn’t punish Lycus, so I did.” H: “And how do I know you’re even telling the truth?” Derq: “‘Cause I’m not a liar!” H: “No-- you just kill people.” [Fight] H: “Derq-- Derq, this isn’t the time for this.” Derq: “Why?” H: “I’ll give you-- three-- reasons.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “We’re going to be here until we rot.” H: “Have you always been so optimistic?” Derq: “Uh, I’m just-- I’m tired. I’m tired of being chased. I’m tired of running. I’m-- just tired. If you don’t bring me back, they’ll just send somebody who will.” H: “You should have considered that before becoming a killer for hire.” Derq: “Well, the army doesn’t train you for peacetime work. Look-- if we get out of this, I wanna make a deal.” H: “There’s no deals.” Derq: “Before you take me back, I wanna see my family again.” H: “Seems strange for a-- family man to be in your kind of business.” Derq: “It put food on the table, all right?! You give me your word-- that I can see my family once more-- and I promise I won’t-- try to run away anymore. My word is good.” H: “Deal. But I want something from you, first.” Derq: “All right. Name it.” H: “You were right about my arm. It’s getting worse. And I-- I need some help.” Derq: “Well, I’ve-- set a few limbs-- and I’ve cut a few limbs off-- when necessary. This is for you-- to _bite_ on. You ready?” H: [Screams] ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “You know, I didn’t do anything other than _kill_ somebody who had killed someone else.” H: “Revenge never evens out. It just perpetuates itself. You ever think about the families of the men you kill?” Derq: “No, what’s the point? It’d only make the work harder.” H: “Maybe you should start.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Sor: “I can smell them. Come on!” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- H: “Throw another one.” Derq: “What?” H: “Throw another rock.” Derq: “Maybe they’ve gone. Maybe-- ” H: “Shh! Listen. They found somebody else. Come on.” Derq: “Shouldn’t we be going that way?” H: “No-- they may need our help.” Derq: “Wait. Well, maybe they have water.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Pirs: [Screaming] H: “Stop! Stop!” A Pir [Screams]: “Help me! Get it off!” Sor: [Screams] A Pir: “Get it off!” [Screams] H: “Quiet! Don’t move!” Sor: [Screams, then Laughs] H: “Don’t-- do-- anything.” Pir: [Screams] A Pir: [Screams] H: “Stay! Stop! Stop.” A Pir: [Screams] H: “Head for those pillars. Come on! Hurry! Come on! Faster!” Derq: “Whoa!” H: “Hey. You have enough energy to do a flip?” Derq: “Yeah-- if my life depended on it.” H: “It does.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- [ACT IV] H: “Get down in the middle, here.” Derq: “What?” H: “Just get down. I’ll tell you when to jump. Now!” Derq: “Thanks. Well, there’s still two left. Ya got any ideas?” H: “Just one.” Derq: “It doesn’t require leaping, does it? Oh.” H: “Remember-- run fast. Go! Now-w-w!” Derq: “Ah-h-h!” H: “Let’s get outta here.” Derq: “Yeah. Water’s west.” H: “Those men didn’t drop out of the sky. Their ship-- and their water-- is east.” Derq: “Let’s go.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Pir’s Voices: “Let ‘em roll!” “You owe me ten dinar!” H: “Hey! I need your boat. I’m surprised you didn’t kill him.” Derq: “Well, I guess you’re rubbing off on me.” H: “Let’s go see your family.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Blond Boy: “Thank you.” Kara: “You’re welcome. Who’s there?” Girl: “Daddy!” Older Boy: “He’s not our daddy.” Girl’s Voice: “Then who are you?” H: “I’m Hercules.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Kara: “You don’t mind putting them to bed?” H: “Oh-h-h, not-- at-- all.” Kara: “Thank you.” Older Boy: “Where you going, Mom?” Kara: “Oh, I won’t be long. You just listen to Hercules.” Older Boy: “My dad used to tell us stories before we went to bed. Can you?” H: “I, uh-- I’m a little out of practice, but I’ll see what I can do.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “I was so afraid I’d never see you again.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Kara: “Then, you’re going back with him.” Derq: “I have to. I gave my word.” Kara: “Maybe Marcus can do something. He’s the new magistrate in Sparta.” Derq: “He was more concerned with-- his career than my life.” Kara: “But that’s so unfair.” Derq: “I know. There’s a lot of things I’ve done-- that I haven’t told you about that I’m ashamed of. I’m sorry.” Kara: “I’ll wake the children-- so you can say goodbye.” Derq: “No. Promise me you won’t tell them I’m here?” Kara: “But, why?” Derq: “If they love me like I love them-- they might end up like me, and-- I want a better life for them than that.” Kara: “But Derq, you can’t just-- ” Derq: “Promise me. If they need someone to look up to-- let it be my father-- or Hercules.” Kara: “I promise. But you should see them. We just won’t wake them.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- H: “We better go.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Marcus [?] [Mar]: “Execute him. Next.” Man: “No! Please! H-- have mercy! I was only trying to feed my family!” Aide: “Derqus Petronicus.” Mar: “His crime?” Aide: “Assassination of a public official.” Mar: “Execute him. Next.” H: “Hold on, here. Doesn’t he get a trial?” Mar: “He was tried-- in absentia-- and found guilty.” H: “I meant-- a _fair_ trial. What about counsel?” Mar: “This is Spartan law. You-- do believe in the law, don’t you?” H: “I believe in justice.” Mar: “Hmm-- justice.” [Chuckles] H: “Now, wait a minute!” Derq: “Save your breath. Spartans have their own _kind_ of justice.” H: “But it’s not right.” Derq: “Neither’s what I did.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Guard: “Get on with it!” Guard’s Voice: “Ooh! Look! Above!” [Fight] Man’s Voice: “Guard! Guard! Stop him! He’s getting away! After him, you fools!” Guards’ Voices: “The prisoner!” “There he is!” “Over there!” “Hurry!” “The prisoner escaped!” “After him!” ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- Derq: “Aw-w-w-- don’t you ever give up?! I suppose you’ve come to take me back again.” H: “That was my arrow.” Derq: “Why?” H: “What was happening to you-- it wasn’t justice.” Derq: “Thank you.” H: “It’s not that easy. You go back to your family. You be a farmer-- a fisherman. But you put your mercenary days behind you.” Derq: “It’s done. Give you my word.” H: “Good.” Guard’s Voice: “Set up a perimeter!” H: “You’d better get going. It won’t be long before they pick up your trail.” Derq: “Hercules-- you’re always welcome in my home.” Guard’s Voice: “After him!” ----------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------
