Maybe It's the Writing?

From: Anne Harnish
Subject: Letter to the Editor
Date: Sat, 11 Nov 2000

I was wondering if you know if there is any way to contact the show's producers or writers? I've been a diehard Xena fan for several years, but the quality of the show seems to be going downhill in the new (6th) season, and I'd like to register a protest to bring back the previous writers.

Has anyone else noticed the really dull dialogue and the emphasis on gore, violence, and near-pornographic depictions of Xena, Gabrielle, and the other women in the past 3 or 4 episodes (such as Xena hanging upside down and being brutally beaten in Who's Gurkhan, and Gabrielle being roasted by the cannibals)? The show seems to be adopting a negative male-centered (?) viewpoint with little understanding of the emotions and motivations that usually drive the characters' interactions. I have a feeling that the poor writing is the real reason that Lucy Lawless doesn't want to do another season.

Can I (we?) protest this? The dialogue doesn't even make sense any more. Gabrielle, Xena, and Virgil are just making verbal proclamations at each other that seem unbelievable and out of character. (The dialogue in Xena and Lucifer's "picnic" scenes were unconvincing to say the least), and Gabrielle's blood lust in Who's Gurkhan was bizarre given her past lengthy moral diatribes about why she does or does not shed blood.

The wit, sarcasm and subtleties are what makes the show unique (at least in past seasons) and, I think, reflect the intelligence of the past writers. I mean, I have nothing against skimpy costumes--they've always been part of the show, but suddenly all we get are REALLY skimpy costumes and lots of skin without much of a story--like in the fight episodes with Xena, Lucifer and the archangel. And the gore! I felt physically ill during the cannibalism show today, and had to turn off the show. Even though the show typically has a lot of violence, it is usually justified or addressed by the characters later so that it has some meaning. And why is Gabrielle now always covered in blood or muck like some kind of mud wrestler? There's enough bad television centered on adolescent male fantasy and it's disappointing to see Xena headed that way. The reason Xena is a good show and better than 2025, Jack of all Trades, Hercules, and most other TV is because it has some depth (along with really good slapstick comedy, a sense of humor, and new takes on historical themes).

Does anyone else out there agree with any of this?

thanks,
a pro-xena, anti mindless-gore fan

Maybe It's the Direction?

From: Alfred H Berger

I watched Sunday the 11-15-00 episode. I live in San Diego, CA. I have found many technical obvious problems with the script. On that episode, Gabrielle was holding a bow and arrow to shoot at a deer. The arrow was "knocked" on the wrong side. The bow was a "left-handed" bow. The arrow was a 20th century "target" arrow with a "target" point. It should have been a "flint broadhead" hunting point. As usual, there was absolutely no blood on any of the swords or daggers. This is a common occurrence on the show. I don't understand why? Other than those few discrepancies, I enjoy the show very much. I have tried to contact the show through their web site , but there is no Email given for comments. If you have their Email, I would appreciate your sending it to me so I may correspond with them about it to their technical department. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Alfred H. Berger

Maybe It's the Kissing?

Re: The 'Kiss' in the Valkryies ep.

COME ON Xenites!!!

Don't you think, considering the show's over and the cast/crew want out that they could have had the integrity and respect NOT to play such a dirty mean, pathetic trick on subtexters?

I'm refering to the fact that the only reason way they will ALLOW these two characters to kiss is if one is in a coma and the other is married to a man and has no memory or recollection of whom she is kissing!!!

I mean of all the contrived possible plot lines they could have come up with, they pick the absolute worst!

And it's not even me, but straight non-subtexters I know feel that if there 'were' going to 'do' it...this is the most dispicable and disrespectful way they could have ever done it.

They expect us to be happy we FINALLY GOT A KISS and this pathetic, low down, vile bone is all they will throw us???

...this is an INSULT!!!!

Nothing more.

Xena_UK

And I've read that some people think that I'm angry that they 'won't' kiss and angry when they 'do'. What I AM angry about is the contrived and dishonest way in which they will only allow themselves to let these two characters kiss. As for lack of respect to the audience...Can anyone say Bobby Ewing and Dallas???

Legacy

Date: Sat, 04 Nov 2000
From: Melissa Palozie
Subject: Legacy!!!

I just saw Legacy for the first time - it was AWESOME!! It captured what I have loved about this show from the beginning. Missy did a wonderful job tapping into what brought people to the show from the start (I started watching in 1994 Herc - before there was a Xena, and Xena ep 1, Sins from the past-because I thought it was Hercules.....I've been hooked since!!!) - so I'm a serious fan from the start of it all!!!

I haven't like the way the show has been going lately - and the 2 eps Missy has written brought me back. I think it is a wonderful opportunity that an "actual" fan was able to write episodes!!! Has this ever been done before with any other series?

Legacy took us all to the roots of Xena, but still showed how far the characters have matured with each other. OUTSTANDING!!! WHERE WAS MISSY LAST SEASON!!!!! They definitely needed her then!!!!!

I have read the commentaries about "Coming Home" and found them terribly over-critisized in the fact they picked apart her story. When has the writing ever been "factual" or based on regular human capabilities? The whole point of the show is to escape reality for an hour. Coming home was a great story (except for the sorry 'bout the chakram incident Gabs, now lets move on" - which I firmly believe in my heart wasn't Melissa's intent!!)

Missy - you did very well in my opinion. Thank you sooooo much for your efforts!!!!! Legacy was the best episode I've seen since Fallen Angel. Thank you!!!

Thank you so much for the effort you & your staff have put into this site - I rely on it as a crutch for my addiction!! LOL

Sincerely
Melissa Myers (my real name, not a copycat!!)

PS - update the site- PLEASE!!

XENA is Everywhere

Xena has even infiltrated e-mail chain mail -- note # 3 (no. 27 is my second favorite)

HOW TO KEEP A HEALTHY LEVEL OF INSANITY

1) At lunch time, sit in your parked car w/sunglasses on and point a hair dryer at passing cars. See if they slow down.
2) Page yourself over the intercom. Don't disguise your voice.
3) Insist that your e mail address is: Xena-Warrior-Princess@companyname.com
4) Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they want fries with that.
5) Encourage your colleagues to join you in a little synchronized chair dancing.
6) Put your garbage can on your desk and label it "IN."
7) Develop an unnatural fear of staplers.
8) Put decaf in the coffee maker for 3 weeks. Once everyone has gotten over their caffeine addictions, switch to espresso.
9) In the memo field of all your checks, write 'for sexual favors.'
10) Reply to everything someone says with, "That's what you think."
11) Finish all your sentences with "In accordance with the prophecy."
12) Adjust the tint on your monitor so that the brightness level lights up the entire work area. Insist to others that you like it that way.
13) Don't use any punctuation (or spell check in my case lol)
14) As often as possible, skip rather than walk.
15) Ask people what sex they are. Laugh hysterically after they answer.
16) Specify that your drive-through order is "to go,"
17) Sing along at the opera.
18) Go to a poetry recital and ask why the poems don't rhyme.
19) Find out where your boss shops and buy exactly the same outfits. Wear them one day after your boss does. (This is especially effective if your boss is of the opposite gender.)
20) Send e-mail to the rest of the company to tell them what you're doing. For example, "If anyone needs me, I'll be in the bathroom, in Stall #3,"
21) Put mosquito netting around your cubicle. Play a tape of jungle sounds all day.
22) Five days in advance, tell your friends you can't attend their party because you're not in the mood.
23) Call 911 and ask if 911 is for emergencies
24) Call the psychic hotline and don't say anything.
25) Have your coworkers address you by your wrestling name, Rock Hard.
26) When the money comes out of the ATM, scream "I Won! I Won! Third time this week!!!"
27) When leaving the zoo, start running towards the parking lot, yelling "Run for your lives, they're loose!"
28) Tell your boss, "It's not the voices in my head that bother me, its the voices in your head that do."
29) Tell your children over dinner. "Due to the economy, we are going to have to let one of you go,"
30) Every time you see a broom, yell "Honey, your mother is here!"

Riding the Fantasy Wave

Subject: ponderings on a possible character

First of all, I would just like to say that your site is my all time favorite Xena site. That being said, I have just been thinking about all the changes in the whole Xenaverse and I was wondering if anyone else has thought about some of the possible characters that Xena could run into in her future travels. The one person I believe she should encounter is the baby that she saved in The Gauntlet. If my memory serves the baby was a boy and should be about thirty years old in the time that Xena is currently living in. for the most part this character is the whole reason for the show in the first place, being the first innocent that Xena saved on her road to redemption. Just food for thought.

I wrote, more than once, last season that I knew beyond any doubt that TPTB would make their way back to the heart hearth of Xena...and to our beloved heroines; that they would resurrect the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle ... the love and the warmth ... breathe life into it once again.

If it could be done...these people...this incredible collective of talented artists...could do it. Of that, I had unyielding faith.

I always knew.

I always envisioned it.

I always believed.

Always.

It wasn't all that hard. People who had done such incredible work, struck such novel ground, brought such an incredible relationship to life in the first place ... had repeatedly moved me beyond reason and repair...and carried me along the edge of an emotional Tsunami more times than I could count...it was easy for me to believe they would find their way home again.

And they have justified my faith beyond my wildest expectations.

I was out of town last weekend...had to tape "The Abyss," for later viewing. When I returned home, I pulled the tape out and stared at it, ran my fingers over it, wondered at the magic I was sure it contained. But I didn't play it. I waited. I prolonged the excitement, the anticipation, the hope... a full 6 days.

Today was the day.

Wow.

What a gift.

What a treasure.

What a blessing.

The Abyss.

How beautifully appropriate.

Because they have brought us, once again, across the Abyss ... and safely to the other side.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the episodes of this season. But the stories of the early season seem now like smaller brush strokes ... culminating toward a bigger picture...the subject of which...the relationship...evolved more beautifully and more fully with this episode ... than with all of the preceding episodes combined.

From the opening frame to the closing moment I was enthralled. Pushed, pulled, carried along on a ride that, for all it's familiarity... I had never taken.

This was Xena at its best. This was Gold. This was Cannon.

All of the classic Xena aspects were present. Xena's superhuman senses and abilities were in full display, as were her Machiavellian MacGiver like abilities to deduce the less than obvious, and to find solutions where none appeared to exist.

Gabrielle's struggle with her conscience. Her unerring faith that Xena would come for her,...and would succeed.

Xena...never hesitating to go into the rapids after Gabrielle....and feeling responsible for Gabrielle's pain over Hope. Finding both resolution and salvation in Gabrielle's love for her once again ... when Gabrielle expresses her last wishes to be with Xena...always.

For the first time in a long while they shared with us their inner voices, their inner struggles...their deepest feelings...in a way that was palpable...believable...and so incredibly moving.

Rain has returned to the desert. The deeply planted seeds of yesterday's flowers have awoken. Life is again renewed, reborn. And ... seasoned and strengthened and matured by a long cold winter....the beauty of the gifts those seeds have brought...exceed any that have come before.

A Day in the Life of a Website Owner Contest

I get a lot of e-mail from people who ask me questions. I usually answer them if I know the answer and may even research the answers if I have the time or perhaps refer them to someone who might know the answers. I try to be helpful, courteous, and polite. However, I am not on the Public Relations payroll of anyone associated with XENA. I do answer the mail probably because I am just a big ol' softy. Nonetheless, I am not obligated or have any duty, ethical or otherwise, to answer anyone who writes me about the show. Yet, I do. And even then, that is not enough for some people. I would like to share with you an interchange I recently had and let you share the fun of what not 'measuring up' to my fandom duties is like.

Should I beging for forgiveness (they are a little upset after all)? Should I read them the riot act? Should I lecture them on e-mail etiquette? Should I ask them why they think I live to serve them (uh-oh, I might have some liability there!)? Just drop me a line on what you think at ktaborn@lightspeed.net.
