I am so sick to my stomach and it has been three days since I watched the last episode of Xena. I can not believe how drawn into the characters I have become, I usually don't even watch TV. 15 years ago my best friend died in a car accident, I have that same sick feeling from watching the show as I did the moment I heard my best friend died. This is crazy that I have let a TV show get to me this much.
Renee and Lucy have done an excellent job of developing their characters that you can actually lose touch with reality and believe they truly are your friends, and a part of your life.
I was so disappointed with the ending. The show was as creative and wonderful as always up until the last moment when Gabby was left all alone. Everything she had was gone. What a terrible way to end such an awesome show. Please tell me this is not truly the end. Tell me she will wake up and say she had a bad dream. Re-run the last show with three different endings and let the fans choose how they want it to end. I would love to see them ride off into the sunset or something better than death.
I've only been a fan for a year but have access to all seasons tapes. This finale could have had a better ending to bring a peaceful closure. I am surely disappointed that it had to end this bloody way.
Who could guess that Rob Tapert had such contempt for the fans who helped make XENA a success? Now we know.
Extremely disappointed! Why couldn't Rob allow Xena and Gabrielle to ride off together the same way Herc and Iolaus did.. was it perhaps revenge for Xena outing Herc in the ratings?? In "One Against An Army" Xena told Gabrielle she was through trying to atone for her past Gabrielle was all that matters.. If you ask me Rob cut his own throat by Killing off Xena.. if he wants to save face he better hurry up and make a Movie bringing Xena back!!
What's going on here, first Buffy and now Xena. Why do the women heroes have to die to save the world. It's just not right, I'm a bitter man right now.
Six years and this is what we get, Gabby talking to herself on a ship to nowhere.
Anyway, I really have enjoyed Whoosh and appreciate all the effort you have put into the site. A labor of love...
I thought the show it self was good. But Xena and GABRIELLE SHOULD HAVE LIVED TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY.
I was really bummed-- saddened even-- by the ending. I can't believe Xena was killed. Not only has a terrific show ended, the main character has ended. Could it have been anymore definitive? I think I understand why the writers chose to kill Xena. Also, the performances by Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor were awesome! Yet, I still can't believe they called Xena off!
It was alright... But did they have to Kill Xena that way.... and making her stay dead on top of that.. Big blow to us fans we know the show was ending but they didn't care how about the fans.. We wanted them to walk into the sunset or something like that.
Big disappointed ...
It was an unfair finale for a great show.
I am so bummed out about the final Xena. The ending was very depressing to me. First to have Xena killed in such a way (although she was totally tough) was horrible and then for her sweetie to find her that way was torture.
It was also, as Gabbers said, "Just not fair" that Xena couldn't come back. Watching her fade away was excruciating. And seeing Gabby on the boat alone just about brought tears to my eyes. I guess we're supposed to be placated with the knowledge that they will share future lives together.
The plus notes are the awesome ways that both of them fought. It was great that Gabrielle was finally given and establishing some independence and she lived up to the task and then some. Seeing her throw the chakram (and for Xena's honor), was awesome. Also, that Gabby can really kiss! Nice job Renee! Just once I would like to have them both healthy, awake and standing for a kiss. Is that too much to ask? Nevertheless, the love they share was well represented this last season and that was gratifying. I was also proud of Xena for introducing Gabrielle to Akemi as her soulmate. Wonderful. So, hats off to Tapert and Raimi for giving a great series!
I was very disappointed over the ending. You do now kill a hero. That is like killing Wonder Woman, The Bionic Woman, etc.....The finale was a great ending to the show..if only Xena had lived..
I was disappointed in the episode, I thought that there could have been a more creative, but less confusing way in which to end the series. It was not even the fact that Xena died. That should have happened, but it was just not a good episode to begin w/ b/c the viewer has very little past information about the other people involved. Xena giving her own life for the "Greater Good" played well into the plot line of the series, but the episode was not surprising, or exciting, I actually even became bored, which has never happened to me while watching this show. The only reason I kept watching was b/c I knew that it was the last one. I'm sorry to see the series end, and there could have been worse ways in which to end it, but there are also better ways to end it.
I was very disappointed. I really wish though that Rob Tapert wouldn't have killed Xena off. I'm not going to stop watching Xena completely, but I certainly won't be as "on the edge of my chair" while watching. I wish that it ended more like the Hercules series. I know what other Xena fans are saying and how they're reacting. Anyway, I hated the season ender and wish that there was a way that Mr. Tapert could redo it so that Gabrielle can have Xena back. Gabrielle just seems unable to continue her life without Xena there beside her. Yes, she does say that she's planning to travel to the land of the Pharaohs, but she doesn't seem too determined to succeed.
--an angered fan
I have been looking at FIN this way. Is the 40 thousand souls really worth it now that millions of fans around the world are in pain, and ultimately changed in a way the producers of the show could have never imagined? I think not!!! Please, TPTB, make a happy ending movie and set this ship right!
Iīm very very disappointed. Canīt even say how much. I feel betrayed somehow.
I feel as though I have lost a dear friend, how could they kill our heroin off in such a way. I would have rather seen them ride off in the sunset to fight another day, but now there is no hope. I will always be a loyal fan, but am disappointed the way Tapert ended the show.
I was disappointed. I knew Xena was going to die, that was all over the internet and I was expecting it. But for all Xena and Gabrielle went through as friends, their good-bye left me a little cold. Gabrielle cried, but I don't feel like enough was said or expressed. I also would have appreciated a storyline that I was already involved in, rather than something new and unheard of before this time. I was left with many questions. What happened to Eve, why didn't Gabrielle ever get to express her love for Joxer, What happened to Ares and Aphrodite, etc., etc.
I do appreciate that Gabrielle now continues the good that Xena set out to do and that she received the knowledge of the pinch and chakram. She has become a true warrior now and lives on to finish her scrolls and Xena travels with her in spirit. But poor Gabrielle, everyone is going to look at her like she has lost it, always talking to a Xena that no one else can see.
I was satisfied in Xena's death though, it made sense and it was for the greater good. It showed her growth and it deserves our respect for her character.
I enjoyed the six seasons of xena. however, I the final ending of the sixth season was horrible!! I have seen the final episode of hercules, him and his best friend walk off into the sunset TOGETHER. I believe that the friendship between Xena and Gabby was much stronger than that of Hercules and his friend. I was disappointed that Xena and Gabby did not leave the season together. Rob did a good job on the final episode of the season, but I still think that xena should have lived and left the thought that she was going to help more people.
I thought we deserved more. Were was the wrap-up, the epilogue, What happened to Autolycus? I've cared about those people for 6 years I want an ending.
Wouldn't Gabrielle find Eve before she left Japan since they send her there a couple episodes ago? And since when have the two of them thought avenging the dead was a good reason to die? Don't we all know Xena well enough to know she would battle the God of the Japanese underworld for those 44,000 souls before she would leave Gabrielle.
If the producers sent less time patting themselves on the backs for the overkill of special effects and paid more attention to the script I would have gotten off the wildest ride on television unhappy it was over but at lest satisfied.
While I definitely was surprised and entertained, I have to vote as "Disappointed" because Xena dies. Someone should send Rob Tapert a copy of the book "The Celluloid Closet."
I was extremely disappointed in the ending.
First, several warnings appeared on the screen which warned against anyone younger than a teen or adult watching the show. There are a number of younger viewers, who were fans of the show, that would then be excluded from the final show of the season.
Second, although it has often happened that Xena was brought back from the dead in future episodes, she was never beheaded and her body burned. This really leaves very little hope of any future movies, because if they were to occur, they would have to be inadequately portrayed.
Finally, I realize that in the ending Xena found redemption and Gabrielle became the warrior. So what? This I will be alive in your heart thing is redundant. Why are so many producers so afraid of doing a happy ending that they can only come up with something miserable to end the series.
Extremely disappointed that Xena and Gabrielle did not "ride off into the sunset" together and alive.
I was really upset that they had to kill Xena and I also thought it was a drag that Gabrielle didnt really try to stop her. It seems like the powers that be let the fans down. LL and ROC are still wonderful though.
I'm very disappointed about the ending of XWP. The story had no meaning. It was unreal. How could 40,000 people die in one fire and it was snowing at the time.?
I enjoyed the final episode, but I was truly disappointed that you felt that you had to kill off Xena to do it. You need to have a 2 hour movie where you bring back Xena to help Gabrielle out in a pinch.
Thanks for 6 wonderful years of Xena I enjoyed it tremendously.
To say that I was disappointed is an understatement. I was devastated by the finale. How could he do this to us, the most loyal fans in the world, I was in Pasadena for the convention and I met the most friendly, generous, witty, courteous people ever. And after Mr. Tapert saying that he would not kill either one of them, that's exactly what he DID! And in such a brutal, horrifying way, I still have nightmares!!! I consider this to be a slap on the face of every Xena fan in the world. I feel completely betrayed!
I always thought that X:WP was all about LOVE, RESPECT, and THE RELATIONSHIP between two strong, brave, beautiful women fighting for the 'Greater Good', who became our icons. The show never disappointed me in this respect. It was pure magic. This is why I expected a different end. I never thought I would see my hero Xena humiliated, naked, beheaded, and hanging from a tree like a piece of cheap meat! And her beloved Battling Bard asking for her head. Just sickening!
I, as a loyal Xenite, ask that you bring Xena back to us ALIVE! And that she is reunited with Gabrielle, her SOULMATE. THEY BELONG TOGETHER! Xena got her redemption long ago through Gabrielle's love! Please, don't let Gabby be alone, it breaks my heart!!!
Always a devoted Xenite.
There are no words to express my grief. Tapert clearly sold his fans out, and bowed to the mindless Hollywood execs. How truly sad! I will not be following anything Tapert produces. He is a selfish man.
I was so truly disappointed, I still cannot talk about it without a lump in my throat. This is not the Xena I have grown to love, so I am still waiting for the final episode that "will not disappoint" the fans. Thanks
Utterly and completely disappointed.
I've been furious since Sunday night. The source of Xena's strength has always been the love of Gabrielle. Now something that Xena believes is good--redeeming those condemned souls--comes at the expense of Gabrielle. It just doesn't jibe.
I keep coming to the conclusion that Xena is being made into a Christ-like figure; Xena has always made fun of the gods, and told people that they didn't need the Greek gods. Very humanistic. Now Xena is a savior, and f*ck Gabby.
B*llsh*t. Too g*dd*mm*d Catholic.
Xena has always been about what incredible things two women who love each other can accomplish. Now Gabrielle is sacrificed so Xena can save the f*ck*ng world. I don't believe it.
A show that has been supported by lesbians--despised by the Christian church--is now emulating Christian doctrine.
I don't believe in redemption in this light. That Xena had to die to save those souls. She didn't have to stay dead. Only a cruel Old Testament God requires vengeance in that way. and Xena was never about the Christian message g*dd*mm*t.
to many CGIs. not enough xena and gabby together or humor.
I was very very very disappointed with how they handle the whole thing it's like if they couldn't come up with a better finale. He lied to the fans by saying that he wasn't going to kill of the characters and he turns around and kills xena off.
I can't believe I am actually sending an e-mail about a TV show. The fact is THIS TV show happened to be one of my all time favorites. Over the years the characters have grown and changed. The writing was so great.... Even when it was bad it was good!!
HOWEVER, this finale was awful! The characters were not developed at all! Did anyone really care about Akemi or her father or even the ghost killer?! We didn't know enough to care. What was up with the mushroom cloud /atomic bomb connection?
When the mushroom cloud went off the 40000 souls had been dead for years. It just didn't make any sense.. The worst part was Xena was not the " bad guy", Akemi was.
My favorite quote from Lucy Lawless in an interview a few years back was " The bottom line is "Xena is a "HOOT"! The finale was about as far away from a "HOOT" as you can get!!
More than disappointed!!
There were some good and bad things in the finale. If this were just a season finale, it might have been great. But for the end of the series, it's a disappointment. Since we know Xena was to be reborn as the Mother of Peace, this seems to divert that path. Where's Michael? Where are Ares and Aphrodite? Why is Xena taking the wrap for that young girl?
Also, I see no reason to add the love interest with the young girl. The girl is pitching love from the moment she saw Xena.
I see this whole finale as a set up for a future film or films or maybe even another season or to take up with our heroes getting together again in the next life. It's just unfinished. I am going to miss the hell out of this series. I am so sick of shows geared to young males, older males, teenage girls, and sports fans. I almost never watch the major networks because of that. Bring back Xena in at least a film or mini-series every so often.
i was hoping they would have an ending that would allow her to return later in a movie or maybe if enough fans wrote they would change their minds and revise it. it's kind of hard for her to return if she finally couldn't cheat death. it's a shame that they ended it,it's was the first really good long running series they've had in a long time. Long live the warrior princess!!!!!
The show had wonderful actors. I especially applaud Renee O'Connor. However, it left too many questions and it didn't follow the basic theme of the six year run. Xena has had many afterlife experiences. Which one is she left with at the end of the finale episode-? Is she going to heaven or is she going to actually stay by Gabrielle's side in spiritual form?
What happens to Gabrielle? Has her character really become balanced? During the last few episodes, she was still struggling with her identity and with the idea that each battle she fought drained her of that identity. Yet we see her as a new warrior. What is to become of the beloved, peace-seeking bard? I would have felt better about that part of the ending if she could have been writing or holding a scroll or even softly saying "I sing of Xena: Warrior Princess" at the end. I also had problems with Gabrielle's monologue before Xena's ghost appears on the ship. It's too light; it's too accepting for such a short period of time.
Perhaps the greatest disappointment comes, not in Xena's death, but in the loss of an understanding of the audience. Many people adored Xena because she was flawed. She had weaknesses; yet, she didn't give up. She became, with the help of a trusted friend, a hero. As the opening theme song has stated, our land is in need of more heroes. We just wanted to see this hero have a happy ending.
Also, I believe that many people would have been more receptive of Xena's death if she had remained dead for an understandable cause. However, the cause seemed to be vengeance. This idea goes against the theme of forgiveness that has been prevalent in the series. This show begs for a sequel. Thank you.
I'm seriously bummed!!! I can't bring myself to "cut the cord" even though I'm hurting. To h*ll with the "critical" and/or "artistic" finale! I want Xena back!!!!!
Argh! How many times does Xena need to atone for what she did in her past!? I always felt that becoming someone who fought for good was the best example of atonement. Not to mention that few people both had the skills she had and used them to do good. Wasn't the point of the conflict between Eli&Gabrielle and Xena regarding the way of peace and the way of war to show that sometimes fighting for good is the only way you can bring peace and hope? In the end, what Xena did as a "warrior princess" was what made her such an effective warrior for the good of people.
The fact that Xena made no mention of her daughter Eve also troubled me. She's dying, she dies, she decides not to come back, and not one word of message to her daughter?
All in all, When Fates collide might have been a better ending, showing how in the end Xena's and Gabrielle's fate was not only to be together, but to fight for good- which we also saw played out in the Soul Possession episode (and its predecessor), in the episode in India where Xena and Gabrielle traveled to future incarnations to fight Alti, and many other episodes.
very saddened about the ending - I know it's just a show, but I feel as though I've lost a friend
My first response was that I was infuriated, felt betrayed, felt incredible grief, and kept chiding myself for feeling this way about an event and people who weren't real - just fictional TV characters. I even have wondered if this was Rob Tapert's way of helping us to accept the end of the series - make us all so mad that we want to sever our bond to it. I have read his so called explanation of why they did it (expecting this reaction from the fan base) and I still don't think he made the right decision. Not just because I don't like it, but I think it goes against everything the show has stood for for the past 6 years. I know that what was done cannot be undone, but I hope (although I doubt it will ever happen) they do make a movie to set things right. In the meantime, I will just continue to read fan fic and I hope those stories, and the multitude of fan websites, continue for many years to come. Thank you for the opportunity to voice my opinions, and thank you for helping to enrich the Xena experience for me via Whoosh. Battle on everyone!
I watched in amazement. While I enjoyed the season finale I didn't like the fact that Xena dies and Gabrielle has to go on without her. It was a bit heavy and I though maybe a little more humor would have been better in the ending maybe bringing more of the old cast back. The season finale had a darkness to it. Maybe they will have a movie and fix it. Anyway, I still love the show and will miss all the adventures and love of Xena and Gabrielle. Thank god I have copies of all 6 seasons.
I guess I was disappointed because I didn't think they were going to kill either of them off. I do like the fact that they are still somewhat traveling together, I just hate to think of Gabby having to suffer, she deserves happiness. She will survive though, and Xena seems happy.
Xena shouldn't been killed. In the season finale of "Hercules, The Legendary Adventure", the character of Hercules lived on. I believed Xena should have lived on as well. I actually would have rather seen Ares change for the better, Xena falls in love with him and they have a family before killing her for good. Good Grief, Rob Tapert!!!
She got her head cut off. That is nasty! Poor Gabrielle. I would have hated any ending as I hate it to end altogether!!
It was just wrong. It was soooo good up to the "water transfer", then it just flew downhill from there. I've never said "what the hell?" so many times in a row! I don't understand why one had to die and leave the other one alone. You don't think ROC is wanting to do a spin-off do you?
I hated the way Xena ended. It was awful! Poor Gabrielle has to live out the rest of her life alone. They should have killed her off too then. That is so sad! I was up all night thinking about it and I felt sick to my stomach. I know it is only a show but still. How could they separate them like that? They are soulmates, they should always stay together! They could have let them both live and finally enjoy a normal, peaceful life. Maybe even have more children that they could actually stick around to raise and enjoy. I am very disappointed!
I am having a very hard time understanding why Tapert felt the need to end the Series in such a horrific manner. This was so unnecessary. I have never been a fan of any TV series before and this ending is quite enough to keep me from ever getting this involved in a series again. It seems clear to me that Tapert & Co., like so many corporate entities, cares not one bit for the "customer" (or "fan" in this case) and what they want but instead seems to get some morbid thrill out of exerting this "power" trip over the very people who made this show the hit that it has been. This could have been a wonderful ending to a great series, leaving us with a feeling of great satisfaction...our heroes alive and well with many adventures left for our imaginations to ponder. Instead I'm left to ponder what in the world could this man have been thinking. I will certainly be on the lookout for any future Tapert projects....so I can be sure NOT to bother watching.
To me Xena was a fantasy come true; tall, cool, graceful, gorgeous and sexy as all heck! What moves! What spirit and courage! Gabby was very cute, loyal, of a gentle spirit, and soulful, and in a pinch, nearly as formidable a fighter as her mentor. I wasn't really concerned one way or the other about the exact nature of Xena and Gabby's relationship, preferring to think of them as very close friends who could likely as not swing either way...
I feel that Joxer got a bum deal, never really becoming much more than just a bumbling, 2 dimensional goof, although I understand he eventually married Xena's look-alike, Meg, so that's a consolation.
As for the series finale, I still have a hard time accepting the abrupt and needlessly gruesome ending that was, I feel, foisted upon the viewers. It seems to me that the over all message and tone of the series could have been best served by ending on a more positive, upbeat note.
I would've been quite happy if it had ended with the episode immediately preceding the ones they provided, namely, the episode entitled 'Soul Possession'. It had all of the elements that attracted me to the series in the first place: a rip-roaring, campy adventure story leavened by a wacky sense of humor, as well as most of the familiar co-stars, and for the ones interested in the show's subtext, it had unmistakable signs of Xena and Gabby's 'special friendship'. With a few re-writes and the addition of a single epic battle scene with Xena and Gabby fighting side by side, back to back against overwhelming odds, going to slow motion, then fading to their present day reincarnations, I believe it could have worked, establishing for all time their epic mythic status and the theme of eternal love and friendship.
The ending as it was seemed to me 'tacked on', and was unnecessarily gory and morbid, even for Xena. I mean, I can't really believe that in all that time spent together Xena never once mentioned Akemi. And all those beheadings, to me, seemed a wee bit excessive.
I was unprepared for the emotional impact that the finale had on me. Guess Xena was more than just a T.V. show after all. Incidentally, my pals all think I'm nuts to be nuts over Xena, but I stand by my gal!
Well, excuse me, I've got to go lie down now, it's been a rough weekend.
I WANTED TO SEND MY FOOT THROUGH THE TV. I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY ENDED XENA THAT WAY. AFTER 6 GREAT YRS AND AFTER 6 GREAT YRS OF WATCHING XENA I THOUGHT IT WAS A SLAP IN THE FACE TO ALL XENA FANS. I AM SURE THEY REALIZED THAT THE FANS WANTED TO SEE XENA & GABRIELLE GO OFF INTO THE SUNSET LOOKING FOR A NEW ADVENTURE BUT WHAT DID WE GET XENA BEING REPEATEDLY SHOT WITH ARROWS AND THEN HER HEAD CUT OFF AND TO REALLY UPSET AND KILL THE FANS THEY HUNG HER UP TO DRY. GRANTED SHE WAS A WARRIOR BUT PEOPLE THIS IS A SHOW AND WE WATCHED TO ESCAPE FROM OUR WORLD AND LIVE IN XENA'S WORLD FOR 1 HR. I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY ENDED IT THAT WAY. WE DEAL WITH DEATH EVERYDAY BE IT VIOLENT OR NATURAL AND KNOWING THAT FOR 6 YRS PEOPLE WATCHED AND DEVOTED THEMSELVES TO THIS SHOW AND THEY COULDN'T GIVE A HAPPIER ENDING. GRANTED GABRIELLE AQUIRED ALL XENA'S SKILLS BUT SHE HAS A GHOST NOW FOR A COMPANON. THAT WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING AND I THOUGHT INSTEAD OF A CRUDE ENDING IT SHOULD HAVE HAD A MORE HAPPIER ENDING. BUT WHAT DO WE KNOW WE ONLY FOLLOWED THE SHOW FOR 6 YRS AND TO SOME THEY BECAME A HOUSEHOLD NAME AND THE LASTING IMPRESSION ALL XENA FANS WILL REMEMBER THE MOST IS HER HANGING THERE WITH NO HEAD OF COURSE LATER WE WERE TREATED TO THE FINDING OF HER HEAD. I AM JUST VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!
I was very disappointed in how the show ended. I really don't think Xena should have died. What is Gabby going to do now that she's gone. IS Xena gone to heaven or is she just going to fallow gabby around in spirit. I think the should have both lived or both died. I want them to always have each other in a mortal body. There the best of friends. It was very sad.
