Amy's Head (04-33)
INSIDE THE HEAD OF AMY RAY
Amy Ray, avec head.
This is a brief interview, but some celebrities are very busy.
Most know this artist as half of the Indigo Girls, and over the course of the last ten years, the Indigo Girls have sold over seven million albums worldwide - including one double p latinum disc, three platinum, and four gold - and earned six Grammy Award nominations. However, there is even more to Amy Ray than immediately meets the eye. Ms Ray founded her own recording company called Deamon Records specifically to aid and encourage new young artists, and released her first solo album "Stag" For many years she has worked to earn herself a reputation as a formidable activist on behalf of the environment and women's rights.
She is also in many of the dreams of Xenites (not to mention appearing in some Uber fan fiction as well), and she was nice enough to answer a few questions for us. I read the answers and my first thought was that this is a person in touch with her heart and feelings.
Is there one part of the writing/singing/producing process where you usually are stuck? What have you tried to change that, successful or not?
Nothing in particular, each song has its stumbling block. My biggest obstacle is my limited guitar vocabulary. I have tried to concentrate on writing a melody in my head that isn't dependent on guitar and then learning the guitar that will match it.
Do fans expect too much from stars?
It depends on the fan. It depends on the star. Stars are just people. We should expect nothing less or more than we expect from each other. I.e., a "star" has the same responsibility to not be a hypocrite as anybody else has.
What were your favorite book, TV show, and movie when you were a teenager?
Book: Demian by Hermann Hesse.
TV: Saturday Night Live.
Film: Clockwork Orange.
What is the most romantic thing anyone has done for you?
Made me a mix tape.
You now have absolute authority over the world. Omnipotent in all areas. What is your first move?
Get rid of nuclear weapons.
What is your favorite SciFi?
Star Trek: The Next Generation. This show artistically combined secular humanism, science, and god/creator based spirituality. As in a lot of sci-fi, Star Trek was a pioneer in TV that pushed socially conscious/revolutionary ideas, i.e., religious tolerance, environmentalism, and combating racism and sexism.
If God gave you the ability to cure one disease, what would it be and why?
Who do you trust?
If you find a spider in the bathtub, do you help it out or squish it?
Help it out.
Do you believe in prayer?
Yes. It doesn't matter who you pray to, its good just for the stillness.
What, if anything, can stop you writing/singing/producing, if only for a while?
A house/building project.
What would your friends say is your worst trait?
What literary character did you most identify with as a child?
The dog in Ole Yellar.
What are the limits in sacrifices for true love?
Moving from my hometown.
What advice can you give to future singers?

Thirty-one-year-old Amy Murphy resides in Indiana, and is an avid reader of Xena: Warrior Princess Fan Fiction. If it exists in the Xenaverse, chances are she has read it! Murphy has also tried her hand at writing fan fiction, turning out two very nice pieces that reside on a couple of web sites throughout the Xenaverse.
