INSIDE THE HEAD OF BRUCE CAMPBELL

Introduction

I'm your pal Brucie, and I'm here to help you

Bruce Campbell

I've been trying for two years to pin this man down with no avail until recently on a wing and a prayer, suddenly, there he was. Mr. Campbell can be more then a tad daunting to us 'joe schmoes'. So when he said yes, I was like, 'Holy s***! What can you ask a person who's been asked it all, and he only wants ten questions? 'He's gonna eat me alive and spit my bones out!' No, I'm not hinting at an Evil Dead 4.

Mr. Campbell is witty, charming, straightforward, and very busy; so say it fast or shut up. Even when he's calling you an idiot, with his humor, the sting is taken right out of it. In a way he even limits himself by saying he's a B-movie actor. To me, he is so much more. In everything he's played, you will remember his character or something he said separating himself from the rest of the cast.

That's talent.

He tells you how it is, like it or not, with such passion and humor, no wonder his books hit the bestseller lists. The newest book soon to be out is Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way. For some reason I have a satisfying urge to smoke a cigarette. He's doing a documentary A Community Speaks with his wife about modern day land stewardship issues from all sides. The man even played an Elvis look alike in Bubba Ho-Tep'.

From
his site:

'Role: "Elvis"
Release Date: In Theaters Now!
Official Website: Bubba Ho-Tep.com
"Check out this concept gang. I play a geriatric old geezer - a 70 year-old in a rest home who thinks he's Elvis. I team up with another old geezer at the home, Ossie Davis, who thinks he's JFK and together we set out to defeat the evil mummy, Bubba Ho-Tep." - BC

With some help, I pulled some kind of questions out and hoped he hadn't been asked them too often. You be the judge. Here's the awesome Bruce's head.

Okay, ME you can call Ash

Ash from The Evil Dead

What would your dream role be?

Well, my dream "situation" would be to rehearse enough to make a character complete, and in sync with the director.

Does it seem that the press and public build up a celebrity just high enough to tear them down?

Yes, and that's too vast a topic to tackle.

Is something wrong with society when wealthy people have multiple homes while others struggle to survive? And who is at fault? The public? The press? Or the wealthy person?

Wealthy people get wealthy mostly because they work their asses off. The problem is, they then have to keep working to pay for all the stuff, so they're not necessarily the happiest people on the planet. Poor people are poor for a myriad of reasons, but poverty can be overcome. I recommend that your readers shoot for upper-middle class - it gives you enough moola without the baggage.

Does it seem like a celebrity can get away with anything, while a person on a lesser income would be pressing license plates without a thought?

Yes, and no. A celebrity can pay to defend him/herself, but a celebrity faces far more scrutiny over far more minor infractions. How many people are busted for pot every day? Yet, unless it's a member of the NBA, or a rapper, we're not interested. It's a 2 way street on that deal.

If your child wanted to go in the show business, what advice would you give them?

Whatever gets them out of bed in the morning.

Wait a minute--this thing's made out of candy!

Autolycus from Xena: Warrior Princess

What foolish inconsistency is your hobgoblin?

Deciding how many questions to answer in an e-mail interview.

Are television and or movie studios running out of ideas? Or have all the ideas been used or are too challenging?

I'm in hell, because all the movies now are rehashed versions of the sh**** TV shows I suffered through in the 70s. Somebody save Hollywood!

Will there ever be classics again like Gone With The Wind?

Yes, and it can be done for under 5 million. Ca

Can there ever be a good person to elect in politics or do you just vote for a lesser form of evil?

If the system were different, different folks would run. Don't get me started.

What do you think about celebrity press covering hours about Jen and Ben while real events are ignored?

I think it's embarrassing, yet "celebrity press" is an oxymoron, isn't it?

Brisco was Firefly before Firefly was Firefly

Brisco County Jr. from The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.

Can there be a good movie made without provocative sexual scenes?

Sure, happens all the time.

Or does sex just sell?

It does, but it's a pretty easy way out.

Are you satisfied in the way your career is going? Explain.

Sure. I make a living doing what I want. I live where I want, and I work as much as my travel tolerances will allow. My wife still loves me. Aside from that, what more does a guy need?

What is the proudest thing you have worked on? What are you eager to work on now?

Don't have a "proudest" because that can only be chosen from the old actors' home when I'm done.

What gets you up on those mornings you really don't want to get up?

That I don't work from 9 to 5 in a cubicle, and never have.

All you need is love... and?

A cash flow.

Yes, I'm really this charming. Cope.

Bruce Campbell

If you were God for a day, who's the first person you'd punish, how and why?

I'd punish any person who started a war, or killed another person in my name. I'd punish them by taking away their "boom sticks."

Given your level of talent, what does it take for another actor to keep up with you?

A curfew.

The world is going to end in 2012. What do you want to accomplish in your life and career before then? What would you like to be doing when the asteroid hits?

I'll be in Oregon, laughing while you're kissing you're a** good-bye. I'm not going anywhere in '12.

Why do you think you are so often cast as the smarmy guy? Typecasting or do you find you're most comfortable in that kind of role?

You're overstating the issue. I recommend that folks go to imdb.com and look up my whole thing if they really want to see what I've done. There are plenty of projects that have nothing to do with "smarm," so there...Having said that, I do like more "off kilter" stuff.

What would you wish for if you could have one wish granted, but only with the understanding that whatever you wished for, it would also be awarded to your worst enemy?

I would wish that I had no power over anyone else.

What have you learned from your writing? What made you want to write?

I learned discipline, and I learned that if I'm not careful, my writing will annoy me.

Is there one Christmas party that REALLY stands out?

Yeah, around 14 - I frickin' cleaned up. It was huge - never to be repeated.

What are the occupations of your siblings? What would you like them to be?

My siblings can be anything they d*** well please. My brother Don just got laid off by EDS in Detroit, and is about to do a tour as a reservist in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. My brother Mike works for Sun Microsystems.

Have you even been in an area directly affected by a disaster? What did you learn?

I was in the LA quake of '94. I learned that people aren't all a** holes - sometimes, they come together just fine. I was also in a head-on collision with a drunk driver in the summer of '03. I learned the value of sobriety, seat belts, airbags, and SUVs, as each individually and collectively allowed me to be here, harassing you today.

What sort of letter writer are you? What kind of correspondence do you keep?

I like e-mails, and I like them short and to the point.

What question should I have asked?

Will there be an Evil Dead 4, because I've never heard it before...
Stay groovy~
Bruce
