THIS WEEK IN XENA NEWS... TWXN 101 08/20/97 Wednesday TWXN is the advance sheet of XENA MEDIA REVIEW (XMR): http://xenafan.com/xmr Excerpts from the following cites will appear in future issues of XMR. From the editor: 1. The excitement of the 100th issue was exhausting. Now we can settle into the 100s. Maybe I might even get caught up! Wouldn't that be amazing? 2. For those who might be interested, the Official Danielle Cormack fan club is online! Feel free to visit the extremely primitive but evolving website at: (http://members.aol.com/dancorfans/index.html). For those without web access, you can get information by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to: The Official Danielle Cormack Fan Club, 297 Boston Post Road, Suite 141, Wayland, MA 01778. Danielle Cormack will be making her first ever convention appearance at WarriorCon in Washington D.C. September 12-14, and her character "Ephiny" will be in both the new seasons of XENA and HERCULES. We just received some productions stills from her latest motion picture and will be placing those on the fan club website soon. 3. Today we have an ecletic mix: Tom Arnold (remember HIM?) finds himself in an article in the great white north which uses the word "xena"; outback@primenet.com gets a promo in Texas; Milwaukee runs a singles ad for Xena (she needs to find those male one night stands somewhere. Might as well be Milwaukee!); Gerry Jacobsen (Ms. Lawless' stunt double) gets some publicity down under; Larry Bonko of Virginia comes out as a "Xenaphile" (someone has got to tell this guy the word is Xenite!) and relays a sad tale from a Xenafan; and last but not least, we read about how SOUL TRAIN has been unwittingly used as a pawn by the ANTI-XENA FORCES. 4. And what does the crystal ball show us this morning? Friday, we have a very special treat: everything you have ever wanted to know about Ngila (promounced Neela) Dickson (XWP costume designer)! Monday we will have another solo article about how the classics have become the cutting edge of Hollywood. Here's the stories: [ ] 04-13-97 STAR TRIBUNE (Minneapolis, Mn). Page 4b. 1128 Words. "Looks like a Case of Sex, Lies and an Erased Tape. Tawdry Talk Snares Ks95 Star Chaser in a Credibility Dispute with Tom Arnold" COMMENTARY: A cultural reference which pops up in a bizarre news item about Tom Arnold from Minnesota. EXCERPT: ...Another Arnold, uh, fan Shannon Smith has taken to introducing herself as "the big entertainment reporter for WMNN" since her Planet Hollywood interview with Tom Arnold. Smith is statuesque in that "Xena: Warrior Princess" way - although she describes her 5-foot-10 physique as the embodiment of "hearty Minnesota stock." Tom took stock: Well, you're a BIG girl. You are the kind who can hold on to a man and never let him go. He might wanna, but he's not going anywhere. "If I offended the other woman by saying that . . . I wasn't trying to be dirty," said Arnold. He insisted that he intended nothing lascivious about a guy not being able to get away. But then he couldn't help interjecting: "Yeah! Probably couldn't!" And he was doing so well on this path to contrition. "I guess Tom would know something about women," Smith said sarcastically. (His Roseanne period was well chronicled.) Smith wasn't as offended by Arnold as Grodnick - and she didn't have a picture taken on his lap. "Didn't get anywhere near Tom Arnold's lap," said Smith. "We did take some photos in some highchairs, and I was seated next to him."... [ ] 04-13-97 THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS. Sunday. Page TV3. 646 words. "Q & A: Your Questions" COMMENTARY: Russell Wong starred in VANISHING SON, which XWP was the Action Pack replacement for (another coincidence in the Xenaverse that a question about VS would appear along with a XWP question). EXCERPT: Q. What's become of actor Russell Wong? He starred in the action series Vanishing Son a few seasons back. I thought he was a great actor and hated to see him vanish after the show was canceled. - W.V., Richardson, Texas A. Mr. Wong (Joy Luck Club) will soon resurface in CBS' pilot remake of the Hawaii Five-O series. Mr. Wong joins Gary Busey as the new leaders of the island cop squad. Original Five-O star Jack Lord will make an appearance as Steve McGarrett, now the governor of Hawaii. An air date for the show has not been announced.... ...Q. Where can I write to my favorite actress, Lucy Lawless of Xena: Warrior Princess? I have heard that a special two-hour movie of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena is soon to be made for TV. - A Fan A. A Xena publicist claims no knowledge of a two-hour TV movie, but Ms. Lawless, a former opera student, is singing her own songs in an upcoming Xena/ Hercules straight-to-video cartoon. There is also a new CD-Rom available with all sorts of information on the two shows, which are tied for the top spot among weekly, hourlong syndicated shows this season. Meanwhile, you can look forward to special "sweeps" episodes of Xena and Hercules coming in May and a guest shot by Lucy Lawless on NBC's Something So Right. For fan club information, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Official Xena Fan Club or Official Hercules Fan Club at 411 N. Central Ave. #300, Glendale, Calif. 91203, or send e-mail to outback@primenet.com.... ...GRAPHIC: Lucy Lawless prevails in the hit action series Xena: Warrior Princess. [ ] 04-14-97 MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Monday. Page CUE1. 136 words. "Hot prospects. TV characters bare their souls for a date" By Sue Pierman COMMENTARY: A singles ad for Xena! REPRINT: Think that having a snazzy Melrose Place address, an extra-snug Speedo and a classy car guarantees a date every night? Not necessarily so. Even if you're hot, hot, hot, your date book may be . . . not. But brainy, sensitive television characters need someone to love, too. The question is, after a harrowing day of exposing government cover-ups or performing emergency brain surgery, how do you find time to meet that special someone? The singles ads, of course! And they might read something like this:... ...CALL ME NOW!!! Independent, assertive brunet warrior princess looking for a man who is my match. Must be adept with sword, steed and spear. Disappoint me and I will take up arms against you. But if you are answering this ad, you would probably enjoy that. I await your reply, you sniveling dog. Xena. GRAPHIC: LUCY LAWLESS [ ] 04-15-97 THE EVENING POST (Wellington). Page 12. 59 words. "Features - Television Entertainment" COMMENTARY: More local NZ television promotion of the show. This time Ms. Lawless' stunt double gets some publicity. REPRINT: CAPTION: THREE WARRIORS - Marc Ellis (left) and Matthew Ridge learn the art of make-believe fighting from Lucy Lawless's stunt double Gerry Jacobsen on the set of Xena: Warrior Princess in Fresh Up In The Deep End, tonight at 7.30 on TV3. The illusions theme continues when the pair meets magician Tara Okan, and pyrotechnics expert Jason Dury.... [ ] 04-16-97 THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT (Norfolk, VA). Wednesday. Page E1. 805 words. "WHRO Fund Drive Comes up Short. $195,000 Was Raised, but Lack of a Big Attraction Kept Public TV $ 60,000 from Goal" by Larry Bonko COMMENTARY: Xenaphile? Larry, Larry, Larry. It's Xenite. And Sarah Herne suffers from a common malady. EXCERPT: ...From one Xenaphile to another. Among the readers responding to my column about TV's guilty pleasures, Thomas Mitchell Jr. in Chesapeake suggested I expand the list to include professional wrestling. Like Thomas, I have long been an admirer of ''Nature Boy'' Rich Flair and the other rasslin' rowdies on TV. Emily, 38, who lives in Virginia Beach, said she's addicted to watching ''Beverly Hills 90210.'' I didn't publish her last name because Emily doesn't want her 11-year-old daughter to know she's hooked on ''90210.'' I haven't missed an episode, Emily. Sarah Herne, 13, in Norfolk called with a sad story. Like your humble columnist, she's devoted to ''Xena,'' but none of her classmates at Northside Middle School shares her enthusiasm for the Warrior Princess. ''I'm made fun of because I watch 'Xena.' I feel so weird,'' Sarah said. Weird? We Xenaphiles are nothing of the sort. We know great fantasy TV when we see it. It's time your MTV-addicted, Beavis-and-Butt-head-worshiping friends realized that, Sarah.... [ ] 04-16-97 THE TIMES-PICAYUNE. Wednesday. Page E1. 637 words. "Xena Derailed. 'Soul Train' Rolls into the Warrior Princess' Tuesday Time Slot" by Mark Lorando COMMENTARY: SOUL TRAIN replaces XENA!!!! Film at 11! EXCERPT: Scanning the dials . . . For fans of "Xena: Warrior Princess," having to file a tax return before midnight was only the second-worst thing that happened Tuesday. The real shock occurred earlier in the evening, when viewers who turned on Channel 38 for their weekly serving of mythological cheesecake got an earful of Snoop Doggy Dog instead. That's right, "Warrior Princess" party animals. "Xena" is out and "Soul Train" is in at 7 p.m. Tuesdays on Channel 38, as WNOL tries to duplicate elsewhere on the schedule the same success it's had on Wednesday nights with "It's Showtime at the Apollo." "Based on the tremendous hunger we've seen for entertainment programming," station manager Madelyn Bonnot said, "we wanted to give 'Soul Train' a try (in prime-time)." "Showtime" is consistently the second or third most popular program on New Orleans television at 9 p.m. Wednesdays. Last week, Bonnot said, the syndicated variety show edged out NBC's bulwark crime drama "Law & Order" to finish No. 2 in the time period. "Soul Train," a rap and rhythm-and-blues dance hour, would seem to have considerably narrower appeal, but Bonnot figures she has little to lose since "Xena" will continue to air twice weekly, at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturdays.... Notices: All back issues of XMR and TWXN are available at (http://xenafan.com/xmr). We herein give praise and thanks to Tom Simpson for the space he has graciously donated from his spectacular, TOM'S XENA PAGE (http://xenafan.com).
