THIS MONTH'S CONTRIBUTORS:
August 1997

VirginiaVirginia Carper
"Volcanoes: the Foes of the Gods"
IAXS Project #228
My goal is to be a garden variety human being. My friends know me as a squirrel. I am, however, a card carrying member of the Squirrel Lovers Club, and do squirrel studies. The FRB.GOV means that I am in U.S. Federal Government Service, and proud of it. My husband, the Civil War Buff, introduced me to things military. Together, we have visited every Civil War battlefield in PA, DEL, MD, W.VA.., VA, and NC. I am also a disability activist. My family watches XWP for the marvelous things Xena does and for Joxer , the warlord with autism. (Yes, we all have various disabilities.)
Favorite episode: ULYSSES (#43)
Favorite line: Xena to Gabrielle: "Are you alright?" Gabrielle: "I just had to get rid of my squid friends." LOST MARINER (#45)
First episode seen: WARRIOR PRINCESS (H#09)
Least favorite episode: A NECESSARY EVIL (#38)

GillianGillian G. Gaar
"An Interview with Hudson Leick"
Special to WHOOSH!
Gillian G. Gaar first contributed to fanzines in the Rocky Horror Picture Show days of the late '70s. Later she put out her own 'zines, including "For The Love Of Kate" (on Kate Bush - duh!). Even later she became a "real" writer, and has contributed to big rags like Rolling Stone and still slaves for Seattle's own The Rocket (we always knew Seattle was cool). She's also written a book, "She's A Rebel: The History Of Women In Rock & Roll." Please buy it. I don't care if you read it. I don't get any extra money if you read it! Now you *know* I'm a real writer!
Favorite XWP episodes: RETURN OF CALLISTO (#29)
Favorite XWP line: Velasca: "I want Gabrielle!" A NECESSARY EVIL (#39), largely 'cause of the delivery; it's the line my Xena friends and I still say and crack up over. Close second: Vampirette whose overlarge vampire teeth made her lisp: "No, mathter. They got away. He and hith idiot companion were wescued by Thena!" GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN (#28), I still go around saying "Mathter!"
First episode seen: Not sure. My mother told me about the series ("There was a woman dressed like a Valkyrie beating up men like in 'The Avengers'") and one night while channel surfing I saw the last 15 mins. of an episode; either the one where Ares was Xena's dad [TIES THAT BIND (#20)] or A FISTFUL OF DINARS (#14)]
Least favorite episode: FOR HIM THE BELL TOLLS (#40).
Favorite moment of subtext: Gabrielle, on her wedding night [RETURN OF CALLISTO (#29)]: "Perticus, I've never been with a man before. Have you? (heart-stopping pause during which my Xena salon pals and I nearly spit our drinks out) Been with any other women?"

RichardRichard LaFleur
"THE PRICE: an Application of Maslow's HIERARCHY OF NEEDS"
IAXS Project #291
Richard LaFleur completed his Master's Degree in Mathematics at Boston College. He is married and has a daughter (a young Warrior in her own right). He was also a software support instructor at Raytheon Data Systems and is now part of the software engineering group at a CAD/CAM company in the Boston area. He has completed 25 years of military service, retiring as a First Sergeant from the Massachusetts Army National Guard. His interest in mythology, psychology and ancient history first turned him on to XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS. The rest, as they say, is history.
Favorite episode: RETURN OF CALLISTO (#29)

CynthiaCynthia Ward Cooper
Supreme Keeper of the Sacred FAQ
Cynthia Cooper was born in Fort Riley, Kansas on December 18, 1959, to a young Army officer and his Southern belle wife. Her early years were marked not only by incessant travel, but also by the knowledge that her birthdate had been calculated to maximize her parents' tax benefits. After a number of adventures, including her rather surprising matriculation from Rice University, Cynthia moved to Dallas, where a promising career as a neo-punk hair model was cut short due to an unfortunate follicular accident. While waiting for her hair to grow back, she earned a master's degree in library science, and is presently masquerading as a technical librarian in a Dallas-area public library. Present obsessions include bad horror movies, Richard III, and the study of ritual cannibalism (though she hastens to assure all that she's a vegetarian). Cynthia has been an ardent Xenite since the very first episode of XWP, and frequently expresses the opinion that the world would be a far better place if everyone would just sit down together and watch Xena once a week.
Favorite XWP episode to rewatch: ROYAL COUPLE OF THIEVES (#17)
Favorite XWP episode overall: THE GREATER GOOD (#21) and REMEMBER NOTHING (#26)
Favorite XWP line: Xena: Xena: "I've got nothing but bad news for you" DESTINY (#36).

Encyclopedia Xenaica Administrator
http://pc-rschnepp.pepperdine.edu
Rita Schnepp, also known on-line as Athena/Rita Reckless, is a Network Engineer at Pepperdine University. She lives in Los Angeles, CA. Rita 'was' a triathlete whose favorite hobby was cross-country running until she came across "Xena: Warrior Princess" on the 'telly' back in October of '95. She has since grown into a 'Xenaficionado' and veritable couch potato. Having been through "Xena De-tox" twice, she can now make it once around the block without having to stop to watch a re-run. She is creator of the "Coffee TaWk" website, (http://pc-rschnepp.pepperdine.edu), and a member of the Southern California Xenafest I, II and III organizing committees.
Favorite XWP episode: SINS OF THE PAST (#01)

Least favorite episode: FOR HIM THE BELL TOLLS (#40)

Laura Sue Laura Sue Dean
WHOOSH! Correspondent
"News, Gossip, and Rumors"
I was born and raised in TOPEKA, KANSAS. I am a twenty-(mumble) year-old aspiring actress transplanted to Hollywood and adore watching, learning and reporting to fans all about XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS. When I am not obsessing about myself or the show, I love to shop till I drop, hang out at the Phoenix Room, and "dish" with my other actress friends (Tori Spelling and Shannon Dougherty). I've just completed my first major film role: the mother in "Little Ezekiel" and have several television commercials under my belt. My manager (Stanley -- short for Stanislavsky) swears that my career is ready to take off...I hope he's right!) Favorite XWP episode: THE QUEST (#37) (Oooh! Didn't Renee just nail_that *entire* episode? Gives me chills when I watch the amazing work she did there.")

Tom Tom Simpson
WHOOSH! Art Director and Betsy's Whipping Boy
http://www.xenafan.com
Giant lizards destroying buildings and toasters taking over the world are only some of the strange products from Tom's wacky imagination. Tom has worked in public television, at MTV, and currently works as a web producer at CitySearch. From time to time when he's not busy smooching his significant other he runs a little Xena page. He also enjoys watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other fine television products. Television is our friend, we should all love and respect it. It gives so much and asks so little. And that's all he needs to say.

ChrisChris Clogston
WHOOSH! Proofreader
My B.S. degree is in Biology (1980) but I've enjoyed a busy non-Ph.D career in biochemistry --I've authored or co-authored over twenty scientific papers in journals such as Analytical Biochemistry, Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Blood, Cell, Nature, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Protein Expression and Purification and in several years' of Proceedings volumes: Techniques in Protein Chemistry. I've co-authored a chapter on the folding of human recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in Protein Folding: In Vivo and In Vitro, published by the American Chemical Society. However, I am not a Bard. I'm a native Southern Californian and therefore have a proficiency in disaster preparedness. I've co-authored the Research Disaster Recovery plan at my place of employment and am a member of the Emergency Response Team there. I became involved in Xena fan activities shortly after the Burbank convention. Seems to have had something to do with obtaining the chakram at the charity auction. I currently hold memberships in: The Protein Society (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology) Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities International Arthurian Society, North American Branch, The Mythopoeic Society, Society for Creative Anachronism.

WHOOSH! HTML Coder
http://arcane.eng.ohio-state.edu/bgaynor/xenarate.htm
Beth Gaynor lives in Columbus, Ohio (go Buckeyes!) and works for small company called DPEC. She edits, codes, and organizes text from books to make them into courses that people take on their computers. Outside of the office, she is often spotted at the Columbus Zoo, where she volunteers as a docent. This usually involves answering the question "Where's the bathroom?", although she gets breaks from that long enough to talk about the animals and help the keepers. Beth is peeking around the corner at her thirtieth birthday and stays young and vigorous by battling for house supremacy alongside her husband against their two cats. So far, the struggle is too close to call.
Favorite XWP episodes: A DAY IN THE LIFE (#39) and THE PRICE (#44).
Favorite XWP line: Meg: "Your little friend just kicked my b*tt." WARRIOR... PRINCESS... TRAMP (#30)
First episode seen: DESTINY (#36)
Least favorite episode: HERE SHE COMES...MISS AMPHIPOLIS (#35)

DianeDiane Silver
WHOOSH! Assistant Editor
Amazed by her fervent Xena addiction, Diane Silver was once a serious sort who would have scoffed at the idea of a whoosh or a chakram cam. Today, she loves them. Silver has been a professional writer for more than 20 years, including stints at United Press International and The Wichita Eagle. She once took a brief detour into politics, working as press secretary for a Democratic candidate for Kansas governor. Currently an editor for a nonprofit foundation, Silver is also pursuing a freelance writing career. Her second book, THE NEW CIVIL WAR: THE LESBIAN AND GAY STRUGGLE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS, will be published by Franklin Watts in 1997. She is at work on her third book, a memoir called SACRED MOMENTS: THE JOURNEY OF A LESBIAN MARRIAGE. Her work has also appeared in national publications, including Ms. magazine. A graduate of Michigan State University (Hi there, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert), Silver shamefully admits to never having been much of a Spartan sports fan. She lives in Lawrence, Kansas, with her son, dog and two cats. A recent convert to the internet, she posts on the mailing lists as Silver and on the NetForum as Freedom2.

HepKaren Maeda Allman
WHOOSH! Assistant Editor
Karen Maeda Allman (aka Heparin) is doggedly trying to finish her dissertation so she can at last put the letters 'PhD' after her name. When not reading and publishing on multiraciality (and its interconnections with gender identity and sexuality) she is one of the booksellers of Red and Black Bookstore Collective in Seattle, Washington. Heparin is also a registered nurse, teacher, former punk rock singer/songwriter with Conflict U.S. (Unjust/Placebo Records) and has been published in music papers (Slash, Slit, The New York Rocker ), Asian American Community Papers (The Pacific Reader , International Examiner) and in academic periodicals and books (most recently in Multiracial Experience: Racial Borders as the New Frontier edited by Maria PP Root). Rumor has that she can cook some mighty fine vegetarian eggplant dishes.
Favorite XWP episodes: THE GAUNTLET (HTLJ #12), SINS OF THE PAST (#01), and THE RECKONING (#06). (I tend to like angsty episodes that dwell on Xena's inner turmoil and have lots of Bulgarian style music in the scoring.)

First episode seen: CRADLE OF HOPE (#04)
Least favorite episode: THE TITANS (#07)
