Well, let's just whiz on by a couple of big monumental milestones. First: No news to most of us anymore (Laura Sue MUST find a way to write more frequent updates, ya know?): Renee O'Connor is pregnant. This was unofficially leaked by those happy parental and step parental units over in Austin, Texas, oh, like a MONTH ago. Luckily for Renee, her husband Steve Muir is responsible for the blessed event and she is not being trailed about by Dahak worshipping, bad-haired banshees like poor, dear Gabrielle. Second big event: that TeeVee show, Xena Warrior Princess, we all seemed to spend SO much time on has finally had it's last day of filming. SOB!
IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO HAVE YOUR FUNERAL BEFORE YOU DIE...
Despite a much publicized wrap party with lots and lots of hors d'oeuvres and champagne and fireworks and E Entertainment cameras on March 31st, shooting didn't really wrap at that time. Unit One wrapped on Friday, March 30, 2001. Renee O'Connor's last time in front of the camera for XENA was with the 2nd Unit on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 (it was wet and raining, how fitting..as though the HEAVENS were weeping.."I want....VENGEANCE"..big crash of thunder please). Lucy Lawless' last shot was with 2nd Unit on Thursday April 5, 2001. The 3rd Unit (which is the main unit without the actors) wrapped the night of Wednesday, April 11, 2001. 2nd Unit was scheduled to finish on Wednesday April 18, 2001. Of course, there is ever so much to do after you SHOOT video. It is safe to say that those little Xena production elves are still hammering away on fresh episodes coming to a TV near you.
LUCY LAWLESS, MELISSA ETHERIDGE, AND THE HAIR THING
Laura Sue was thrilled to see Lucy Lawless here in New York, even if she WAS incognito and quite possibly taking parts that would be much better for Laura Sue to play. Ms. Lawless, a self proclaimed HUGE fan of sapphic rocker Melissa Etheridge, trucked over to the Oxygen TV studios in a pair of tight low cut jeans, strappy red tank, high lace up boots and bad girl short curly black wig (yes people..it is a WIG) for a small private concert with the Oxygenettes (and Tipper Gore) on April 19th at 12:30 PM. As some of Laura Sue's readers will remember...Laura Sue has been spending her Wednesday nights over at Oxygen TV doing their on-air chats. (Join Miss Dean Wed 6-7PM EST) Needless to say, Laura Sue was somehow mysteriously NOT invited to this private little concert. Laura Sue wonders if this was about the not-so-subtle hint by one of the Oxygen producers admonishing Miss Dean to NOT dump the entire bowl of complementary feminine products into her bag. Knowing Lucy's track record with stealing hotel slippers, Laura Sue is certain that she isn't the only Xena personality with a lot of free Oxygen tampons in her purse. The concert will be aired in July on Oxygen.
MORE WIGS...AND BEING JUDGED BY THE COLOR OF ONE'S SKIN
Ms. Lawless carried over her New York rocker chick persona into Sam Raimi's Spiderman film (currently shooting in New York), playing a smoking punk girl draped over a bald nose ringed girlfriend. Laura Sue would like to point out that she, too, submitted her headshots for a small part but was told that she looked too tan to play a believable New Yorker. Curse those years poolside in LA! Perhaps Lucy's appearance will turn the tide of bad luck the film has had. Since starting production, the film has been having a series of unfortunate incidents; including death, theft, and serious injury. Lets all hope it ends safely (especially since they were shooting very close to Laura Sue's apartment and she has no insurance) The movie also includes Xena alums Bruce Campbell and required baby brother hire Ted Raimi.
UM...PEOPLE...THE BODY ISN'T EVEN COLD YET
GEEEZ..can they just wait till the show is actually OVER before they come in and take everything?? That is exactly what Studios USA has done in a particularly vulture-like move, carted off EVERYTHING from the Xena lot. Turner's Auctions is holding the sale of Xena/Hercules/Cleopatra/Young Herc and Jack of All Trades of props and anything else they could find lying around. The auction will be held over three days - May 4, May 5 and May 16. in Auckland, New Zealand. Laura Sue can imagine that there are some VERY unhappy campers at Ren Pics...not to mention fans. Expect to see listings on Ebay immediately after like: "Genuine trash can ACTUALLY used on the Xena set, includes piece of dried chewing inside actually chewed by Lucy Lawless: $1,000". Expect imitations of this priceless object.
OPENING CHECKBOOKS FOR THE RIGHT REASONS (NO NOT SHOES..CHARITY PEOPLE!)
Something that would be lovely would be if some of those items ended up at a charity auction. Helloooooo Studios USA! In keeping with the tradition of organizing a charity fundraising drive to celebrate milestones in the lives of Xena cast members with donations to charity, Sword and Staff will be doing a donation drive to celebrate the announcement by Renee O'Connor and Steve Muir that they are expecting their first child. Go to Sword and Staff for more details.
SHE BIG AND BAD AND LOVES THE FANS
Claire Stansfield (Alti) is possibly one of the best wired (some may say built as well...ahem) stars of Xena out there. Laura Sue will let Claire herself give an update on Spring in the Xenaverse. Here's an update from Miss Evil herself:
"Spring is coming... the flowers are blooming...big Xena conventions are looming! Now when in the heck are my damn episodes gonna air? If you are like me and have been wondering what happened to my upcoming episodes on Xena: Warrior Princess, me thinks we have a confirmation! Okay, April 28th for Send in the Clones and then May 7th for "When Fates Collide." I hope you enjoy them..(at last). I will be seeing many of you at the big Creation Pasadena Xena Convention. I will be sharing the stage with all the big guns. Heehee... I can't wait! I am a bit nervous, but very excited to be in everyone's company. I will be at the Pittsburgh Comicon next weekend April 27-28 with the lovely Alex Tydings. And right now, I am in the middle of directing a new music video for Claudia Christian (of Babylon Five)."
SPEAKING OF CLAUDIA CHRISTIAN...
Claudia Christian,(Babylon 5 star and currently hanging with the Xena homegirls Claire "Alti" Stansfield and Alex "Aphrodite" Tydings..do we see a girl band on the way? Let's hope they pass on the Claudia and the Pussycats suggestion) has a new movie coming out. It is called Atlantis: The Lost Empire. This is the latest Disney animated blockbuster and Claudia voices the character Helga Sinclair. Release date is June 15, 2001 in the US of A, and Laura Sue saw the trailer when she went to see Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles (OKAY! I was a tad homesick, I don't want to hear anymore about it!) and it looks fun and frighteningly adult. The Fetal Film Report gives it a 4 out of 5 excitement factor. Joining Claudia in the movie will be Michael J. Fox, Mark Hamill, Jim Varney, James Garner, James Mahoney, Father Guido Sarducci, David Ogden Stiers, Phil Morris, and Jacqueline Obradors.
WOULD YOU NOW LIKE TO SEND CEASE AND DESIST LETTERS TO BANKRUPTCY.COM?
Fandom.com, undoubtedly losing millions and millions of dollars in their carefully crafted online business plan to Fandom.tv (never mind), is officially in the toilet and looking for a big old sweet smelling life preserver to bail them out. Now if you'll remember, Fandom.com bought Creation Entertainment (you know, those people we all spend a lot of money with on merchandise and conventions) and Cinescape, Supposedly, the websites will not go down but will end up someplace else (uh huh). It was reported that Fandom.com would be selling back Creation to the poor saps that sold them off in the first place, while Cinescape would be going up for sale. After laying off most of their staff, all that's left are six employees hanging around the offices fielding questions for potential buyers, and, we must assume, surfing Monster.com. Creation will continue business as usual. That means you can still expect your tickets to not arrive on time and wonder when your new copy of the Chakram will be showing up. Thank the gods!!
CAN AN ASPIRING ACTRESS HAVE A HUG?
Speaking of Creation, here's a note from Sharon Delaney, President of the Creation-run Xena Fanclub:
"Lucy and Renee will be appearing onstage together at the Pasadena convention. I'm going to be the moderator and I'd like to solicit questions for them. They can be for each of them individually or duo questions. You don't have to be going to the convention to send in a question, but if you are, please let me know. Please send the questions to my email addy at: email@example.com"
You may skip the usual "How can I become an actress?", "Can I have a hug?" and "Do you have any advice for aspiring actor" questions. Face it sweetheart, NOBODY wants to hear these one more time.
IT'S LIKE JURASSIC PARK...BUT WITH XENA
According to occasional Xena director Josh Becker, Lucy Lawless has got a big part in Renny Harlin's (The Long Kiss Goodnight, Driven) upcoming flick starring Pierce Brosnan (James Bond). The movie is based on a short story by Ray Bradbury called "Sound of Thunder." In the film Brosnan will play a time travel hero and great white hunter. His goal is to travel back and hunt a dinosaur. However, when he does this he tampers with evolution and chaos theory does its thing. Cause and effect ensue and Brosnan like all true action heros has to save the day. The story was also done as a 1/2 hour Ray Bradbury theater piece (Lawless fans will remember that Lucy ALSO appeared in a RBT episode called "Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum"). Hopefully, Lucy will do more than scream a lot and fall down during chase sequences (typically what girls are told to do in action films with male stars). Laura Sue thinks that Lucy could kick Brosnan's butt anyday.
ANYTHING YOU CAN DO I CAN DO BETTER
While hanging out in New York, Laura Sue simply HAS to speculate over whether or not recent gossip she overheard in a piano bar has some merit. The gossip amongst the afternoon Broadway theater lushes is that Ms. Lawless might be interested in a turn as Annie Oakley in "Annie get Your Gun". After all, Lucy's a huge Ethel Merman fan (who immortalized the role), she loves to do musicaltheater (especially on Broadway), it's a short term commitment, and current star Reba McIntire is ready to head back to Nashville come summertime. Of course...all those people had one too many flat vodka tonics and one too many flat renditions of "To Dream the Impossible Dream".
RUNNING ON FUMES, BUT STILL ON THE ROAD
The Netforum, long standing monument to copious typing (and communication) in the Xenaverse, ALMOST bit the dust with all of the other Studios USA bulletin boards the other week. Thanks to some very polite and timely letter writing by the community, it will remain open till the end of the show. Unfortunately for those die hard Cleo 2525 fans, you lost your board. For Jack of All Trades fans, a new board is run by fans and is now at: http://www.xenite.org/forums/fantasy_tv/jack_of_all_trades/.
BRUCE CAMPBELL: ACTOR, DIRECTOR, AUTHOR, CULT HERO
Speaking of Jack...it seems that Bruce Campbell's alleged "stories about fans" book is FINALLY coming out in print (talk about revision cycles baby). Bruce is kicking off his world tour to promote the book at Metro Comix in Santa Barbara, California on June 16, 2001. Head on over..but you'll need tickets. Tickets go on sale April 30th. Knowing Bruce's devoted following, you better plan in advance!
LET'S JUST CUT TO THE CHASE, SHALL WE??
All right, lets just go straight to the thing we know is on EVERYBODY'S minds right now. What the HECK will happen in the finale? There are so many rumors flying around that Laura Sue must warn her readers that continuing further may spoil the episodes, or, at the very least, make you lose a lot of sleep angsting about it. If you DON'T want to hear rumors about the finale (you big wuss), then HOP ON DOWN TO THE VERY BORING BUT BRIEF RATINGS AND MERCHANDISE NOTE
BIG OLD PILE OF FINALE RUMORS
Now then, the first rumor we heard way back when is that Xena gets killed by samurais in Japan. Then we heard that Xena would NOT die (and neither would Gabrielle) because Rob Tapert (and the FANS) wouldn't like it. Then we heard that Xena heads east (again, presumably to Japan) because her daughter Eve is in trouble (later updated to "was killed off camera"). Some big secret or huge evil from Xena's past returns (an enemy that is still at large that supposedly the fanbase would scream "how could we have forgotten"). Gabrielle was supposed to be the one that saves the day (or "battles on" as Livius on the Netforum put it against "the great monster she knew would come"). The speculations abounded from Draco (oh, pu-lease) to Dahak (gone, well maybe, on Hercules)..but one favorite theory was the EvilXena from Dreamworker (ooooh...those black contacts again!). Now the most FAR out rumor is that Xena dies and follows Gabrielle around like "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (didn't they do that in The Quest?)
Well, to make matters even MORE confusing..the lineup for the last episodes has changed to include two reruns before:SEND IN THE CLONES
LAST OF THE CENTAURS
WHEN FATES COLLIDE
MANY HAPPY RETURNS
Sins of the Past
FRIEND IN NEED I
FRIEND IN NEED II
Please note the interesting CHOICE of episodes to be rerun. Two great episodes, for sure, but what does it all mean? Are we spending way too much time thinking about this. YES! But that is what we do, sweetheart. Maybe we all better buy some melatonin and fluffy eyemasks to get some sleep over the next two months.
VERY BORING BUT BRIEF RATINGS AND MERCHANDISE NOTE
Laura Sue has no compelling news on ratings OR merchandise. if anyone has any news, particularly on the non existent Xena DVDs (yes folks..there are still NO Xena Warrior Princess DVDs for the US market...only the Hercules Xena trilogy), PLEASE contact Laura Sue if you can help inform.
LETTERS TO LAURA SUE
My dear Laura Sue, Gossip Queen (all caps), Information Sponge and Spoiler Ho,
Why IS it that your adoring fans haven't heard a peep from you in ages?! Hello?! I need my gossip fix. Since XWP has been in serious rerun hell, I haven't had a thing to tickle my funny bone and pique my interest for juicy tidbits. So 'fess up! Where HAVE you been, child? Please tell me Betty Ford didn't kick you out again for hitting on Gina Gershon (how many times has it been?!). We NEED you, Ms. Dean so come back to us! Peace on ya,
But daaarling....Laura Sue wrote an extremely LONG and magnificently penned (not to mention filled with great drama and pathos) update on March 20th.
Why that's only a couple of weeks ago! Laura Sue has been compiling more juicy tidbits to post soon..but really! Doesn't Laura Sue get credit for length and good typing skills of her most recent update??? Can't a girl get ANY of the love and adoration she NEEDS without people constantly wanting her to work work work her extremely well manicured and enviable fingertips to the bone!
-Laura Sue Dean
PS. And I never hit on Gina Gershon...it was she who pretended to spill a drink on me and then try to "pat" me dry. How was Laura Sue supposed to know she was just interested in saving my new Donna Karan sweater?
i was just wondering, why at the end of the norse triligy did they give gabrielle long hair? it really didn't play and special part in the episode. when gabrielle was sleeping, she still had short hair, and she wakes up, BAM! long hair. and the episode after that, they dont acknowledge the over night hair cut at all. i was just wondering what went on there.
Even in Ancient Greece, there was always a cheap salon ready to spiff up Amazon Queens who need a perky do for the gal on the go. To fill you in completely, Gabrielle had a shampoo and conditioner (she neded after a year),the standard shag cut from a Vidalis (he was very happy to see her again, but distressed that she still stood like a fishwife), and was supposed to get a hot roller set. Xena got impatient reading Amphipolitan in the waiting area and dragged her out to the nearby tavern before they could give Gabby a full beauty treatment.
Are we happy now? *g*
Always willing to inform the populace...
Do you know if Renee O'Connor has ever had a nose job. I am not sure if it is just her haircut or something more, But it certainly looks different in the later episodes.
DLBDL..or shall I call you B?
I am fascinated by how many people ask that. It is the haircut..and the blondness. As stated once before, the more you bleach your hair, the smaller one's nose naturally appears. That is why Laura Sue's nose is the size of itty bitty button. This appears in Dr. Jayne Mansfield Loreal's seminal work "The Deep Physics of Hair Color", which has been out of print since 1968.
LAURA SUE NEEDS YOU!
If you HAVE any good dish, write me. Need a rumor confirmed, denied, or ambiguously tap danced around? I'm your gal! Just drop Laura Sue a line!
I can't print every letter, but I'll do my best to answer your questions... and report those late-breaking XWP stories!
