WHERE HAVE I SEEN YOU BEFORE?

By Xorys.

And who was who in Hercules, Tramps And Thieves?

The roguish Autolycus was played once more by Bruce Campbell, who has played the role in *many* episodes of both HTLJ and X:WP. Bruce also played the man himself, Rob Tapert, in the HTLJ eps Yes Virginia There Is A Hercules and For Those Of You Just Joining Us.

Bruce has also got behind the camera quite a bit, directing the X:WP eps Key To The Kingdom and The King Of Assassins and the HTLJ eps Revelations, The Vanishing Dead, What's In A Name, For Those Of You Just Joining Us, Redemption, and Stranger And Stranger.

Outside the Xenaverse, Bruce has an *enormous* filmography, which I summarised most recently when discussing the cast for the X:WP ep Takes One To Know One. You can find out more about Bruce and his activities at his own website: http://www.bruce-campbell.com/.

Autolycus' previously unheard of ex-wife, Luscious Deluxe, was played by Traci Elizabeth Lords, perhaps more widely known just as Traci Lords. As most of you probably know, Traci started her show-biz career by running away to Los Angeles at age 15 and getting into sex films using a forged id. By the time she was 18 she had appeared, by some counts, in over 80 "adult features". Something of a sensation was then caused when her real age became public. Since that, after making a couple of final "adult" movies, outside America, she has re-launched her career, with considerable success, in other directions. To tell the truth, when I looked into it, I was amazed by how many credits she does have - she's certainly been keeping busy. As a partial list, she has appeared in the movies You're Killing Me (1999), Blade (with Wesley Snipes, 1998), Me and Will (1998), Nowhere (1997), Underworld (1997), Boogie Boy (1997), Extra-Marital (1997), Full Blast (1997), Stir (1997), Blood Money (1996), Virtuosity (with Denzel Washington, 1995), Serial Mom (with Kathleen Turner, 1994), Plughead Rewired: Circuitry Man II (1994), Ice (1993), Intent to Kill (1993), The Nutt House (1992), Raw Nerve (1991), Shock 'Em Dead (1991), A Time to Die (1991), Cry-Baby (with Johnny Depp, directed by John Waters, 1990), Fast Food (1989), Not of This Earth (1988), and Object of Desire (1987).

A couple of Traci's movie credits are of particular interest to Xenites. She had a major featured role in the 1995 movie Skinner - she played the target of a psycho killer played by Ted Raimi... I wonder if this is how she got the Xenaverse gig? I actually rented this one, probably because of the Ted Raimi connection, and it was pretty dreadful, from what I remember.

Another movie in which Traci met up with Xenaverse figures, albeit none of them quite so prominent as Ted, was the 1993 TV feature made from Stephen King's The Tommyknockers, in which she appeared with Elizabeth Hawthorne (Hercules' mother Alcmene in the eps The Wrong Path, The March To Freedom, and The Warrior Princess, Queen Omphale in Hercules And The Lost Kingdom, Jocasta in Rebel With A Cause), Jim McLarty (Callisto's dad Pankos, the eye popping Fish Merchant in Love On The Rocks, Myles in Eye Of The Beholder, Pankos in Armageddon Now part 2, the Teacher in Reunions), Yvonne Lawley (the Norn in Norse by Norsevest and Somewhere Over Rainbow Bridge, Gryphia the old nurse in Key To The Kingdom), Craig Parker (King Cleades in Key To The Kingdom), and John Sumner (the Sheriff in this ep).

Traci has also been pretty active on TV, featuring in the series D.R.E.A.M. Team and Profiler, and appearing in episode of Viper, Nash Bridges, Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher, Roseanne (several eps), Highlander, Sweating Bullets, Super Force, MacGyver, Married... with Children (2 eps), Tales from the Crypt, and Wiseguy.

Apart from all this, Traci has made something of a musical career for herself, in the dance mix area... I actually have a copy of her CD 1,000 Fires somewhere, and I quite like it.

The Sheriff of this one horse town with a big bank was played by John Sumner, who is *quite* a familiar Xenaverse figure. We've seen him before as the Inn Owner in Hercules And The Lost Kingdom, Broteas in The Road To Calydon, Domesticles in Once A Hero and The Wedding Of Alcmene, and the Judge in Hercules On Trial, and over on X:WP he appeared as the beauty contest organizer Lord Clairon in Here She Comes...Miss Amphipolis.

Outside the Xenaverse John can be seen in several things. He played a Deputy in the 1996 film The Frighteners, which starred Michael J. Fox. This is an interesting sort of film for Xenites, in that it features quite a few Xenaverse actors, but you could easily watch it without spotting any of them (believe me - I watched it again the other night on TV, and I had trouble, even knowing who to look for). If you keep your eyes peeled, apart from John, you can spot Elizabeth Hawthorne (Hercules' mother Alcmene in the eps The Wrong Path, The March To Freedom, and The Warrior Princess, Queen Omphale in Hercules And The Lost Kingdom, Jocasta in Rebel With A Cause), Stuart Devenie (Asterius the Magistrate in And Fancy Free, Count Von Verminhaven in Greece Is Burning, and Kernunnos in Resurrection and Render Unto Caesar), Danny Lineham (Drinker #2 in The Warrior Princess, Grathios in The Reckoning, Lycus in The Sword of Veracity, Johe in Prodigal Sister, and the School Teacher in Let There Be Light), George Port (the First Critic in The Play's The Thing), and Jim McLarty (Callisto's dad Pankos, the Fish Merchant in Love On The Rocks, Myles in Eye Of The Beholder, the Teacher in Reunions).

Another piece in which John appears with a whole slew of other Xenaverse folks is the 1996 TV feature Every Woman's Dream. John plays a Senator, and the piece also features Jon Brazier (Mercenary #2 in The Vanishing Dead, Jakar in The Outcast, Slave Trader in The Fire Down Below, Trinculos in A Star to Guide Them, Walsim in TDHD, Tarsis in VA), Bruce Allpress (Enos in Unchained Heart, an Old Man in The Road to Calydon, Septus in Cast A Giant Shadow, Skouros in Not Fade Away, Phidias in War Wounds, and Stouras in Redemption), Lisa Crittenden (Hecuba in AFA), Mark Ferguson (Krykus in H&H and RN, Dagnine in OOW and PI, John Smythe in TXS, Prometheus in Hercules And The Circle of Fire, Hades in Hercules In The Underworld, Craesus in As Darkness Falls), Anthony Ray Parker (The Minotaur in Hercules In The Maze Of The Minotaur, Ipicles in The Gauntlet, Valerus in Once A Hero, Bacchus in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Pinullus in A Comedy Of Eros, The Deliverer in The Deliverer), Jay Saussey (Dead Amazon in AITST, Village Girl in Hercules and the Lost Kingdom, Oena in And Fancy Free and Greece Is Burning), and Grant Tilly (Toth in The Lady And The Dragon).

You can also see John in the 1993 TV movie of Stephen King's The Tommyknockers, which I discussed above, under Traci Lords, and in 1992's The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, along with Lucy Lawless, Donogh Rees (Chi'ah in this week's X:WP ep) and lots of other folks who've shown up in the Xenaverse (John played the Judge).

John also appeared in an episode of The Ray Bradbury Theatre, as did many other Xenaverse actors, including Lucy Lawless.

Herc's clumsy would-be sidekick Klunter was played by Glen Drake. Did he look familiar to you? Last time we saw him it was in a *very* different role. The only other time Glen has appeared in the Xenaverse before was in the HTLJ ep Twilight, in which he played Nikos, the rather pathetic character who went to war grizzling constantly about leaving his family behind, and rather predictably got wounded and died a protracted death.

Outside the Xenaverse, Glen appeared in Heavenly Creatures, a made in NZ film about a real-life case involving a murder by two teenagers. This film was one of Kate Winslett's first major acting gigs, and personally I would highly recommend it (but with the notation that it is based on a strange and tragic murder case, and may be disturbing for some). It also featured Darien Takle (Xena's mom, Cyrene), and Gilbert Goldie, (the Village Elder in Locked Up And Tied Down), and although they can't be seen, Jennifer Ward-Lealand worked on the film as an acting coach, and George Port (The First Critic in The Play's The Thing) as a digital effects operator.

Glen was also on the NZ soap Shortland Street for a while, in common, it seems, with a significant percentage of the NZ acting profession.

And what about the balding, straggle-haired leader of the posse? Did you think you'd seen him somewhere before? I should think so. He was played by Stephen Hall, who we last saw as the stage-struck warlord Therax the Terrible in the X:WP ep The Play's The Thing. Stephen first appeared on X:WP as Draco's ill-fated lieutenant Hector in Sins Of The Past. When next we saw him he was playing the lugubrious warlord Thelonius (always accompanied by his henchman Munk) in The Quill Is Mightier. And we subsequently saw him as the Captain in Tsunami. He's also encountered Hercules quite a few times, playing Minion #2 in Hercules In The Underworld, the Lead Soldier in The Vanishing Dead, and Purces in The Fire Down Below.

Stephen also has quite a few film credits. He played Ivan's mate in the 1996 NZ film "Broken English", which can now be found on video shelves. This film also featured Marton Csokas (Borias, Khrafstar), Gilbert Goldie (the Town Elder in LUATD, Nevus in Hercules And The Lost Kingdom) and Amanda Rees (Mina in The Sword of Veracity, Marpessa in We'll Always Have Cyprus).

Another NZ film worth checking out, if you haven't already seen it, is 1994's "Once Were Warriors" in which Stephen plays the Prosecuting Officer. Taungaroa Emile (Ximenos in Ares, Linxus in Sky High), George Henare (Hidsim in LM, Zarathustra in Let There Be Light and Redemption) and Ian Mune (Menas Maxius in Gladiator, King Sidon in The Apple) also appear in this feature.

Stephen also had a (fairly small) role in Jane Campion's acclaimed 1993 film "The Piano". Ian Mune is in this one too, as is the (nearly) ubiquitous Bruce Allpress, and it also features Gordon Hatfield (the Lieutenant in Unchained Heart, Seerus in Death in Chains, Rufinus in The Furies, Minion #1 in Hercules In The Underworld, Temple Guard in The Wrong Path, Freedom Fighter in Not Fade Away), Tamati Rice (Garel in The Price, Vercinix in When in Rome), Jon Brazier (Walsim in TDHD, Tarsis in VA, Mercenary #2 in The Vanishing Dead, Jakar in The Outcast, Slave Trader in The Fire Down Below, Trinculos in A Star to Guide Them) and Stephen Papps (Pylendor in Unchained Heart, Seer in OOW, Teles in The Road to Calydon, Trilos in Protean Challenge, The Darkness in Norse by Norsevest and Somewhere Over Rainbow Bridge).

Stephen appears as a French Naval Officer in a film that should be known to all Xenites - 1992's "The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior". This film, of course, features Lucy Lawless in a pre-Xena role, and many others who later brought to life inhabitants of the Xenaverse can be seen in it: Stig Eldred (Titus in King Con, Minion Leader in Hercules In The Underworld, Belus in The March to Freedom, Maceus in Cast A Giant Shadow), Alison Bruce (Melosa in H&H, Postera in Gladiator), Mark Ferguson (Krykus in H&H and RN, Dagnine in OOW and PI, John Smythe in TXS, Prometheus in Hercules And The Circle of Fire, Hades in Hercules In The Underworld, Craesus in As Darkness Falls), Nigel Harbrow (Koulos in TBW, Basculis in LM, Patrol Centurion in AGD, Turkos in Gladiator), Donogh Rees (Chi'ah in Them Bones, Them Bones, Frigga in Norse by Norsevest and Somewhere Over Rainbow Bridge, the voice of Mnemosyne in Let There Be Light), Simon Prast (Nemos in COH, First Soldier in What's in A Name, Patronius in The Wedding of Alcmene), John Sumner (the Sheriff in this ep, the Inn Owner in Hercules And The Lost Kingdom, Broteas in The Road To Calydon, Domesticles in Once A Hero and The Wedding Of Alcmene, and the Judge in Hercules On Trial, and over on X:WP he appeared as the beauty contest organizer Lord Clairon in Here She Comes...Miss Amphipolis) and (naturally) Bruce Allpress.

Stephen Hall played a Police Constable in the 1990 NZ feature "The Grasscutter", in which Jon Brazier (Walsim in TDHD, Tarsis in VA, Mercenary #2 in The Vanishing Dead, Jakar in The Outcast, Slave Trader in The Fire Down Below, Trinculos in A Star to Guide Them) appeared as his sergeant, and Joel Tobeck (King Beraeus in Promises, Strife in Encounter, When A Man Loves A Woman, Judgement Day, End Of The Beginning and Armageddon Now, Strife and David Scott Pollison in Yes Virginia There is A Hercules) played a victim. Peter Vere-Jones (King Silvas in ASC, Zeus in Judgement Day) was also in this film.

And what about Luscious' matched pair of hunks, Kuff and Lynk? You probably didn't recognise either of them. Kuff was played by Steve Cleary, who hasn't been credited in the Xenaverse before, and about whom I could find nothing. Lynk was played by Patrick Kake, who has actually been in quite a few HTLJ eps before, including The Road To Calydon, The Festival Of Dionysus, The Vanishing Dead, and Armageddon Now Part 1... but you probably wouldn't recognise him, since in these eps he always appeared as a double for Kevin Sorbo in the role of Hercules.

On the other hand you might just have recognised the barkeep who was serving Auto his drinks - he was played by Bob Johnson, who we previously saw as an ill-fated lieutenant of Xena's in a flashback in the ep Daughter Of Pomira ("They'll kill us all!" "Not you they won't!" ).

Bob can also be seen in the 1997 action movie Maximum Revenge.

And what about the beefy executioner? He was played by Mark Nua, who seems to frequently be called upon when a large, muscular type is required. We last saw Mark going around bashing people backstage as the warlord Cleon in the X:WP ep The Play's The Thing. Previously he has been seen on HTLJ in several meaty roles, playing Skoros in Gladiator, the Ogre in The Vanishing Dead, a Wrestler in The Fire Down Below, Otus in Once A Hero, and the would-be hero Mong in Hercules On Trial.

And the Vendor from whom Auto stole an outfit apparently left behind by Swiss time-travellers... had you seen his face before? Yes you had (probably) - he was played by Danny Phillips, who we saw as a worshipper of Hera in the recent ep Be Deviled.

The other two credited roles were John Palino as the Emcee and Abbey-Mai Westoner as the Waitress (who definitely could have brought a harassment suit against Auto...). I'm not 100% sure about their names (those darned end credits are *so* hard to read), and I don't think either of them have appeared in the Xenaverse before. Nor could I find anything else out about them.

The ep was written by Vanessa Place and Liz Friedman. I'm afraid I don't know anything about Vanessa Place, but Liz Friedman is of course well known to us as a long standing member of the production team. Liz's previous writing credits are for co-writing the HTLJ ep Lost City with Robert Bielak, and for co-writing the X:WP ep A Family Affair with Chris Manheim.

The director was Charles Siebert, who previously directed Prince Hercules, Medea Culpa, Top God, Reunions, Just Passing Through, and Fade Out. He also directed the X:WP eps The Reckoning, Death in Chains, Ties That Bind, Orphan Of War, Ten Little Warlords, A Comedy Of Eros, and Gabrielle's Hope (with Andrew Merrifield). He can also be seen in person playing the role of Sisyphus in Ten Little Warlords, and he did the voice of Poseidon in Ulysses and Lost Mariner (the god of the seas was, of course, visually presented as a CGI effect).

TALES OF THE HERCAVERSE

07-13-99. Bruce Campbell on an on-line chat stated that his final episode of Hercules was one in which Autoylcus robs the First Greek Bank along with his exwife, played by former XRated superstar Traci Lords.
