SYNOPSIS

Blood drive for Jack; Lena and Bianca do some bonding over bloodletting; Bianca thanks Greenlee for giving blood and finding Lena a job

RE-CAPS:

From The Official Site at ABC.com:
http://abc.go.com/daytime/allmychildren/episodes/2003-04/20030613.html

Bianca is touched when Lena arrives to donate blood for Jack. Bianca agrees to sit with Lena after learning she is afraid of needles. Lena and Bianca share a laugh when Bianca tells her about Erica trying to fix her up with Kirsti. Bianca admits she might see Kirsti again.

From About All My Children
http://allmychildren.about.com/cs/recaps/a/bl20030613r.htm

...Lena hurries in and tells Bianca she just heard about her uncle on the car radio, and she’s here to give blood; she’d like to help if she can. Erica looks over in dismay at seeing Lena.

Bianca thanks her for coming, and Lena says her uncle was very fair to her, after everything. She admits she’s never donated blood before and is afraid of needles, but Bianca promises to be there to help her out. Erica comes up and demands to know what she’s doing here? When Bianca says she’s here to give blood, Erica thanks Lena and wisely shuts her mouth. Bianca and Lena go to get her tested...

Bianca asks how Lena’s doing? Ms. Kundera’s not looking or feeling so great, and asks Bianca to talk to her about anything to get her mind off of it. Bianca says she knows Lena saw her at the Valley Inn; Lena agrees she was a very beautiful woman and asks if she knows her? Bianca laughs that Lena doesn’t, and neither does she—it was a blind date! Lena wonders if her mother knows, and Bianca laughs as she says her mother set it up! She loves horses and fashion, and happens to be gay; by an amazing coincidence, this woman happens to love horses and fashion, and also happens to be gay! Lena says it feels good to laugh together again...

Bianca thanks Greenlee for coming, guessing she saw her mom on television. Greenlee quips that she did but decided to come anyway, “No offense.” Bianca agrees, “None taken.” She says she’s grateful she’s here, and wants to thank her for finding Lena a job; it really meant the world to both of them, and she thinks Leo would have been proud of her. Greenlee thinks he’s the one she should be thanking for keeping her on her best behavior!

Bianca asks if Lena is ready to go, and they start to leave together. Lena wants to know about that date her mother set her up on—will she see her again? Bianca tells her, “Yeah, I might.”

From Soap Slut

Aw, not only does Lena turn up to give blood, she's afraid of needles! I love this woman. Bianca's touched too and stays with her while she gets poked with a needle. They share some easy and fun conversation, but Bianca admits that she hasn't ruled out seeing Kristi again. Lena accepts this news as gracefully as a Sad Polish Fox possibly could...

ALL GAY RE-CAP

This all gay recap is by C.K..

TODAY ON AMC:

  • Simone does the chicken dance.
  • Everyone's half-naked, so Christina Aguilera plays in the background. It's only fitting.
  • Mary wears the Immunity necklace.
  • It's National Play Dumb For Greenlee Day.
  • Erica and Kendall don't bond.
  • Greenlee's tired. Of herself.
  • Mary makes goo-goo eyes at Comatose Jack.
  • Bianca makes me cranky.

At The Hospital - Erica is, once again, talking to Comatose Jack: his ears are barely hanging in.

Clairvoyant Opal stops Erica's pity fest about her role in Jackson's latest health crisis; Lena arrives, too, and goes straight - well, you know what I mean - to Bianca and tells her she's heard Erica's plea over the radio and that she's there to donate blood. Erica sees her and, wait, give me a moment to decipher that look. Not. Happy.

Bianca: "Thank you for coming and helping out my Uncle Jack."
Lena: "Well, he was very fair to me after everything."

Yeah, he was. Dump Bianca and go for him.

Bianca: "Have you ever donated blood before?"
Lena: "No. Actually, needles scare me a little."
Bianca: "Oh, well, don't worry one bit: I'll be there to help you out."

Really? What's this sudden case of the nice, Bianca?

Erica: "I don't think that is blood in Lena's veins and Jack sure doesn't need ice water."

Oh for Pete's sake: aren't they done insulting the woman? This is getting incredibly tiresome. And let's not speak of what is in whose veins 'cause, Erica, you won't come out ahead.

Kendall and Boyd arrive together, followed by Carlos, Greenlee and Mary. Kendall sits next to Erica; she covers her eyes with her hands and I think that's why she's stopped talking: her lines are written there. Many hair-flips and hand gestures later, we get to the point, but not before I wonder whether Erica is a frustrated traffic cop.

Kendall: "I'm not gonna abandon you. Please, please, Erica, tell me: what can I do for you?"
Erica: "Kendall, if you wanna do something for me, please go to the donation center."

And there you go. I'm down with Kendall's need to get close to her mother, but the girl has no sense of measure or of Erica's need to be a Prima Donna. I mean, her need to be alone for a minute.

Donation Center - Lena looks like she'd rather be at the dentist's, but then Bianca arrives and asks her how she's feeling.

Lena: "Maybe you should just talk to me about something: anything will take my mind off..."
Bianca: "All right. So, you saw me at the Valley Inn. What else did you see?"

Oh, way to go Bianca: why don't you talk about her tragic life in Poland instead or, I don't know, polio! Twist that knife a little deeper, why don't you? And why are you asking her with that smile on your face? You know, my girlfriend told me the way I interpreted Bianca's smile the other day when she realized Lena had seen her with Model Vapid was wrong: she thought that was an embarrassed smile while I felt it was self-satisfied - and I’m right! Bianca is making me really cranky: I want Lena to move on. Now.

Lena: "You were with a beautiful woman: do I know her?"

Lena, donating blood is seriously hampering your judgment.

Bianca: "No. Neither do I: it was a blind date. […] I couldn't believe it either but then things started to fall into place, like, I love horse-back riding and, by amazing coincidence, so did she. I love fashion and, by amazing coincidence, so did she. I am gay: by amazing coincidence..."

All right, we get it. Shut up now.

Lena: "It's good to laugh with you again."

Bianca, this is your cue to feel as small as you are. Go ahead, fell small. Smaller. Smaller. Smaller. A little more. Little more. Great: now you fit in my pencil sharpener.

Bianca approaches Greenlee to thank her for donating blood.

Oh, you don't even know just how crucial this donation is, Binks.

Outside the room, Carlos is sitting next to Lena, making sure she's ok, doing what Bianca should be doing. A**. Speaking of which, here she comes, asking Lena if she's ready to go.

Lena: "Bianca, that date that your mother set you up on: will you see her again?" Bianca: "Yeah, I might."

You are such a twit! And a twit with bad taste: Kristy, or Kirsty - whatever her name is - is as vapid as a vacuum cleaner: why would you ever choose to be with her? I'm not even comparing her to Lena: she makes herself look bad all on her own. And why are all these lesbians in Pine Valley all of a sudden? Also, if you end up with Kristy, Greens will make a play for Lena and, let me tell you, she will find use for that room service! Oh, wait: that's a fic I'm reading. Never mind. But you're still a tasteless twit.

MONDAY ON AMC: A whole lot of crap. Plus, the gag factor.

COMMENTARIES

Commentary by "C"
Can I just say how ridiculous this whole blood donor thing is?

First of all: donor records are confidential and coded; even if the list *had* been sitting around for Erica to peruse, she wouldn't have been able to tell whose blood matched Jack's -- the *hospital* wouldn't have been able to tell.

Secondly: there's no way in h*** Greenlee weighs over 110 pounds, the usual cutoff for donation. There's a neat little JavaScript that calculates a person's Maximum Allowable Blood Loss (now, granted, this isn't the most scientific approach ever, but my doc friends tell me it's a fair approximation). Assuming Greenlee weighs around 95 pounds and isn't anemic, her MABL -- and that's if they drain her to the point where she'd need a transfusion herself -- would be not quite two pints, nowhere near enough to replace what Jack's already lost as well as support him through major surgery.

Thirdly: why the h*** couldn't they just use type O blood? Universal donor, that sort of thing?

Fourthly: I won't even go into the writers' understanding (or lack thereof) of genotype vs. phenotype.

Fifthly: maybe if they'd sweet-talked David ("I save lives!") Hayward, he could have gotten hold of one of those artificial blood products they're developing in Sweden. Or who knows, maybe he's cooked up something like that in his cabin. But now I'm just being silly.

Lena parts are indicated in red for those who only want a Lena fix

The merriment continued at the heathen graduation party.
Jamie: So are you dating Joanie?
Reggie: Didn't you ask me that yesterday?
Jamie: Yeah but on this show we tend to have the same lines day after day.
Extra: Hey Jamie, would you go out with me?
Jamie: Who are you?
Extra: I'm just a day player but since Laurie is being written out you're going to need a new love interest. Give me a call, OK?
Simone: Maybe going swimming in our underwear wasn't such a good idea after all.
Kenny: You have heard of shrinkage haven't you?
Simone: Don't worry. So now I'm standing here in my underwear, soaking wet, shivering and jiggling.
Kenny: I just want you to know you've made me very happy. Not to mention all the teenage boys here at this party. Not to mention some dirty old man in ABC's executive offices.
Laurie: Dad, what are you doing here?
Doug: I heard there was a keg party going on and I came to get a little drink. Hey kid, poor me a cold one.
Extra: Sorry sir. No overage drinking allowed at this party. We do have our standards.
Extra: Uh oh! Everybody run! It's the cops.
Officer: Don't worry kids. We're just here for Simone's arrest for the month of June. Keep partying.

At Fusion Greenlee, Kendall and Mary watched Erica's televised appeal.
Erica: Jack needs blood from someone with a very rare blood type or he will die. I just can't go through losing my fiancee. I know I look fabulous in black but I don't want to have to wear it every day. So please, help me - I mean Jack - and donate blood today.
Mary: :::gasp:::Greenlee, you - I mean we - must go donate blood at once.
Greenlee: Why? It's not like one of us will be a match.
Mary: Oh, you never know. Stranger things have happened. Now hurry. You - I mean we- might be able to save him.

There was a lot of action at the hospital.
Lena: I'm here to give blood.
Erica: Forget it.
Lena: But what if I'm the only person in the world that can save Jack?
Erica: Then I'm going to miss him terribly.
Bianca: Mom!
Erica: All right. She can give blood. But that's all she can do.
Kendall: Mother, I'm here for you.
Erica: Good. Go donate blood.
Kendall: I'll do that later. Is there anything you need ?
Erica: No.
Kendall: How about now? How about now? How about now?
Erica: Kendall, either go give blood or go to your room!
Kendall: ::sniff::: I knew your liking me wouldn't last. The audience was enjoying it too much.:::sniff::::
Greenlee: How can you treat your daughter like that? I'm so glad I not a member of your family and I never will be.
Erica: And I'm glad you'll never really be a part of my storyline. :::hiss::::
Greenlee: :::grrrr::::

The blood center was the place to be at Pine Valley Hospital.
Nurse: I can't believe this crowd. This blood drive is bigger than Fusion's sexiest man contest.
Lena: I feel sick. Please cheer me up Bianca.
Bianca: OK. I'll tell you all about my blind date with a beautiful model. My mother actually hates you so much she fixed me up with another woman. Can you believe that? Heeheeeheee
Lena: Next time maybe you could just bring me a glass of orange juice.
Greenlee: Hi Carlos. Did you give blood?
Carlos: No. They said it was against hospital policy to take blood from someone who shows no signs of life.
Brooke: But Jack and I've been friends for years. Why can't I donate blood for him?
Nurse: Sorry, no veteran characters allowed. Don't feel bad. I turned down Stuart and Marion Chandler just a few minutes ago.
Joe: Good news Erica. We've found the perfect donor. Why this blood is such a perfect match that the donor could be Jack's long lost child.
Erica: Wonderful. I'll just go tell Jack the good news.
Mary: Don't worry Jack. The perfect donor is giving blood for you right this minute.
Erica: How did you know that? And what are you doing here? :::Hiss::::
Mary: :::smirk::::
Jack: Somehow I think this wouldn't be a good time to regain consciousness.

***** (clip b) [Lena comes to give blood]

[PV Hospital]
Nurse Extra #1: Can you believe the response? I have never seen anything like this.
Nurse Extra #2: The switchboard started lighting up as soon as the broadcast was over. [Erica and Binks step out of the ER in time to overhear her]
Bianca: See, it's working.
Erica: Oh, if only -- if only we can find a match for Jack now.
Opal: [arrives and hugs Erica. Her vaguely Asian-inspired red sleeveless dress, of some shiny satiny fabric, is not as retina-blinding as some of the outfits she usually wears but the random pattern of bamboo leaf-ish silhouettes scattered over it reminds me of the blotches on the rag I used to wipe my pen-brush with between characters when I dabbled in calligraphy] Oh, honey, goodness, I just saw you on the tube and [cheek-kisses Binks, who kisses her back] threw myself in the car. How is Jack?
Erica: Oh, he's holding on.
Opal: He is. Well, good, because that poor man, I mean, here having his life at risk again.
Erica: I know, I know. And it's my fault again.
Opal: [takes Erica off to one side] I think I got here just in the nick of time. Now we are gonna sit you right down and find that strong woman that I just saw on television.
[Lena enters at a gawky half-run and rushes over to Binks]
Lena: Oh. Bianca. [clasps Binks' left arm just above the elbow; Binks' left hand automatically reaches for Lena's waist and lingers for a moment] I heard Erica [a surprised Binks softly interjects, "Lena!"] on my car radio. I'm so sorry to hear about your uncle.
Bianca: [exhales and briefly closes her eyes] Thank you.
Lena: [deep breath] So, ah, where do I go to give blood? I'd like to help if I can.
[Erica notices Lena and drills her with the evil eye]

***** (clip c) [Bianca takes Lena to the blood area]

Bianca: Thank you for coming and, and helping out my Uncle Jack.
Lena: Well, I know he was very fair to me after everything.
Bianca: Have you ever donated blood before?
Lena: No. [laughs nervously and smiles, embarrassed] Actually, needles scare [does a cute little dip of her knees] me a little.
Bianca: Oh, well, don't worry one bit. I'll be there to help you out.
Erica: [walks up behind Lena] What's she doing here?
Bianca: [as Lena moves to stand beside her, slipping easily into Girlfriend Mode, to which Binks doesn't exactly object] Mom, she's here to give blood.
Erica: Oh. [left hand goes to face and prominently displays the Ugly Purple Monstrosity of an engagement ring] I, ah... thank you, Lena. Bianca: All right, um... [places left hand on Lena's right arm; Lena gives her a brief grateful glance before looking back down at the floor] let's get you tested. [guides Lena down the hall] Opal: [comes over to Erica] Well, good for you, girlfriend. You didn't even lose your temper in the face of that awful traitor. Erica: I couldn't. She's here to give blood. Opal: Well, I guess we need even hers, huh? Erica: I don't think that is blood in Lena's veins. And Jack sure doesn't need ice water. Opal: Well, let's just forget about Lena for the time being, for Jack's sake. Erica: I'll try. Opal: Good. I gotta go do a little donatin' of my own, honey. Um, are you gonna be all right here by your lonesome? Erica: Oh, yes, of course, I'm fine. You go ahead, go ahead. [hugs Opal] Opal: All right. I'll catch up with you in a bit. Erica: Okay. [Opal leaves. Erica sits in a chair in the lobby. Enter Kendall and Boyd]

{snip KickMe!Kendall/Erica angst, partly because it has nothing to do with Lena but mostly because I don't think I can look at that dress for as long as it would take to transcribe the scene}

***** (clip d) [Bianca tells Lena about Kristi]

[The sunporch-cum-ad hoc blood donation center. Nurse Extra #1 adjusts the bandage over the tubing at Lena's right arm while Lena queasily looks away. Binks approaches, peering around NE1. Sanitation violation: NE1 goes over to Opal on the next bed and touches her without first changing gloves. Yes, yes, I know, get a life. Opal gives no indication that she even sees Binks with Lena -- from her non-reaction she might as well be in the next room. Not that it's a major thing but you just know her ears would have been flapping and a brief reaction shot in response to the Lianca banter could have been amusing]
Bianca: Lena? How are you feeling?
Lena: [gesturing with her left hand at her right arm] Maybe if you just talk to me about something, anything, you'll take my mind off it. [exhales and looks woozy]
Bianca: [right hand goes to her throat] Okay, um... all right, so you saw me at the Valley Inn. [drops hand] What else did you see?
Lena: [tries to smile and act casual but watches Binks intently] You were with a very beautiful woman. Do I know her?
Bianca: No, um... neither do I. It was a blind date.
Lena: Oh. Does your mother know about this?
Bianca: [smiles] She set it up.
Lena: [astonished] No! [Binks giggles]
Bianca: Yeah, I swear. I couldn't believe it either, [brushes hair behind her right ear] but then things started to fall into place, like... [increasingly theatrical gestures] I love horseback riding and by amazing coincidence, so does she, and... I love fashion and by amazing coincidence, so does she. I'm gay... [Lena laughs hysterically] by amazing coincidence... [Binks starts laughing as well]
Lena: [beams] It's good to laugh with you again. [Binks smiles down at her]

***** (clip e) [Bianca thanks Greenlee for finding Lena a job]

Kendall: You think we can avoid the ER?
Boyd: Ah, you mean, avoid Erica? Come on. [Boyd wraps his arm around Kendall's shoulders, Kendall's right arm goes around his waist and they leave, passing Binks who's on her way in to talk to Greenlee.]
Bianca: Greenlee, thank you for coming. I assume you saw my mom on television?
Greenlee: I did. And I decided to come anyway. No offense.
Bianca: Right. None taken. I'm just, uh, grateful that you're here. And I wanted to thank you for finding Lena a job.
Greenlee: All it took was a few words to my well-connected granddad.
Bianca: Well, it really meant the world to her. And to me. And I think Leo would have been proud of you.
Greenlee: He's the one you should be thanking. He's still keeping me on my best behavior.

***** (clip f) [Bianca tells Lena she might see Kristi again]

[hallway outside the blood donation center]
Carlos: So you're still feeling a little faint?
Lena: [rubs her right forearm and doesn't quite address Carlos directly. Apparently Sosnovska's discovered that the only way to act with MaxAlex is to ignore him] No. [stands and continues to rub her arm. Carlos stands when she does and follows when she moves a couple of steps] I think thinking about it is worse than actually doing it, you know?
Carlos: Most things are like that, you know? [Lena smiles at him as Binks walks up]
Bianca: Hey. Um... are you ready to get going?
Lena: Sure. [Binks looks up and smiles politely at Carlos, who seems to realizes he's in the way; he leaves, entering the blood donation room with one quick glance at Lena]
Bianca: [to Carlos' back] Bye. [takes a step closer to Lena]
Lena: Bianca, [exhales] that... date that your mother set you up on. [quick intake of breath] Will you see her again?
Bianca: [jolted into remembering that, oh yeah, Lena's *not* my girlfriend any more -- you can see the wheels turning in her head as she slowly nods. A rare HPF tactical error, bringing up Kirsti. Up to this point she'd been doing so well, playing everything perfectly] Yeah, I might. [exits stage right. Lena mentally kicks herself, then follows]

[amc030613a starts]
Joe: Erica, I just heard about your plea for blood donors.
Erica: Oh, yes. Well, Joe, I hope it helps.
Joe: Oh, a plea from Erica Kane? My goodness, we'll be flooded. We've set up an emergency blood donation center in the sun porch.
Erica: Oh, thank you. Thank you, Joe. We are going to get your blood type, do you hear me? I promise. But, Jack, you have to make a promise, too. You have to promise me and everybody who loves you you are going to hold on until we get that blood you need. And we will. We have to.
