SYNOPSIS:
This synopsis is by Liz Sheppard.
Lyla is shopping in a village, but finds trouble just because her husband is a centaur. Deric comes by and they walk away. While in their home, Lyla hears men with torches coming by and she wakes up her son, Kiefor, and tells him to run away. The men torch the place and hits Lyla, knocking her unconsious in her burning home. Deric comes home, seeing the men run away and screams.
Salmoneus runs into Hercules and starts humming and talking about self-actualization and flowers within and other junk. The man's turned into a hippy. Herc says that Sal can come along with him as long as he doesn't hum.
They reach the remains of Deric's house, when Herc finds a torch thing with a strange symbol on it. A little boy says it's the symbol of the Cretans, but his mother quiets him up and says that they don't know anything. The go into Athens and find a man with the symbol tattooed on his arm. He says that they don't care for people who are different, meaning centaurs or friends of centaurs. Lyla's sister, Leuriphone, tells Herc and Sal that Lyla and Deric had a three year old son. She said that Deric stoof up to the Cretans, which the Cretans hated.
Cletis, with a cart, gets a scare from noises in the woods. Deric finds him. Cletis screams.
The Cretans have a meeting and decide to give "the immigrants" a farewell party. Herc and Sal run into the Cretans and a fight breaks out. While in a tavern, Herc and Sal try to get some rooms for the night when the dead body of Cletis and a very angry Deric come through the door. He runs away, saying this wasn't the last one.
The magistrate allows Herc and Sal to go with the Cretans toget Deric. They find him on top of a hill. He saw Cletis' death was an accident. Merkus picks a fight with Deric and Deric kills him in self defense. Herc and Sal make camp before going in the swamp, because Herc knows centaurs don't like swamps. Demecles goes to their camp and says he has no quarrel with Herc, but that he doesn't like centaurs. Jakar and the rest of the Cretans retreive him.
The duo follow the real tracks and find a young centaur boy named Kiefor and Deric defending his child. Herc tells Deric that Nemmus died a good death by helping him save the girls(As Darkness Falls). Deric takes Herc to Lyla's grave and Sal plays hise-in-seek with Kiefor. Kiefor sees a vision of Lyla. She says she will always be there for him. While in the village, Deric tells the magistrate he didn't murder the men, but he locks Deric up until the deaths are proven accidental. Jakar goes to get the kid, with Demecles not liking it. Word of this gets to Deric, and he confesses to the murders. If he didn't confess, they would kill Kiefor.
Leuriphone brings Herc and Sal to her house because Demecles didn't want his buddies to see him talking to them. He says what happened during the fire, and that he didn't help Lyla becuase he was afraid of his buddies and the fire. Herc frees Kiefor and hides him with Leuriphone; while the Cretans decide to stone Deric. Herc reaches him before a stone can get to him. Herc tells the crowd that all people are different, like eye color and height. Jakar still tries to get the crowd to stone Deric, but nobody does, and he runs away. Deric goes after Jakar and brings him back. Demecles confesses that he was wrong and he was sorry to Deric. Deric accepts his apology and Sal hums.
Deric decides to stay because Lyla loved this land. Kiefor says that his mom is here, and she appears. Zeus brought her back to life. Happy ending.

12-26-00. Robert Tapert, in an interview with WHOOSH to be released January 1, 2001 (#52), said that "Over the years there's been more nitpicking about certain things [from USA Studios], but originally on HERC and originally on XENA there were the broadest of strokes, regarding things you couldn't do. We said "Sure, you can! Watch!" One of the things we were told you can't do is kill mothers in the teaser. So, I had to mess around with a HERCULES episode that had Lucy [Lawless] as Lysia [OUTCAST (H18/205)] in it and make the mother a ghost."
01-07-99b. On the USA Thanksgiving Day XENA/HERK marathon (Thursday, 11-26-98), Lucy Lawless did pre-recorded bits between the shows. For the first OUTCAST break (6:00pm), she said, "From Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Outcast, starring Kevin Sorbo, and me! In this episode, we already knew that Xena was going into series, so I dyed my hair dark. They brought back the Lyla character which I had played previously. Kevin couldn't let this go by, so he slipped in a little ad lib about, 'Doesn't she remind you of Xena?' Of course Iolaus says no, not a bit. So, watch out for it. Here we go." For the second break (6:30pm) she said, "You know, we um....small injuries are just part of the job. You are never without bruises and you just long ago stopped complaining about things like that, you know...torn ligaments and things....you know, they'll just call you a big baby if you complain about that sort of thing, so we have to have something pretty major if you want to get a day off...you have to, I don't know, smash your pelvis....brain damage is good...that seems to go down well. But generally, no, it doesn't matter what happens to you. You just get back on that horse and ride." At the end of the episode (7:00pm), she said, "Yup, givin' birth to a centaur."
