SYNOPSIS:
Synopsis by Liz Sheppard
Fortune, Goddess of Luck, makes a rich guy very unhappy. Meanwhile, Iolaus is getting frustrated because Hercules is getting more praise than him. Also meanwhile, a couple are trying to cross an old bridge and they end up getting in trouble. Herc saves the guy while Iolaus tries to reach the woman. He reaches her, but she's too scared to move and ends up freaking out. Iolaus looses his grip and the woman falls, leaving Iolaus very terrified.
Iolaus is very frustrated on having somebody die and ends up quitting the hero biz. Herc tries to convince him to stay while he's having some sort of weird long fight scene in every Herc ep. Iolaus goes to a tavern but has to pay two dinars for stew because he's not Herc's partner. He continues to look for a job, but can't get one because he was a thief when he was a teenager.
Herc'c camping out when Fortune gives him a visit and starts babbling that the woman's death was her fault. She wants to help, but Herc tells her not to.
At another camp site, Iolaus is having bad flashbacks of the woman's death when Fortune pops by. He wishes that he had never met Herc and she blanks out his memory. He doesn't know who Herc or Fortune is. She thinks she is in trouble.
Iolaus is walking through the dirty part of town where he finds a beautiful woman who takes him to some thugs. Big long fight scene. Iolaus and the girl team up and steal from the thugs. His last memory was when he was 15.
Herc visits a king who wants to send some money to Nemia, the town that Iolaus is in. Herc helps Spiro and they go with the money. Spiro decides to become Herc's new sidekick. They run into a pregnant woman from Nemia and the guys give her a ride. Sprio doesn't like her because she's from Nemia.
Iolaus is gambling, where he cheats and plays with knives. Thenatos, who works for a powerful guy named Xeno comes by to talk with Iolaus. He wants Iolaus to work for Xeno. Iolaus reveals that Thenatos was stealing from Xeno and Xeno makes Iolaus his new number one. Thenatos convinces the others to kill Xeno and Iolaus.
While Herc and Sprio are off the wagon, it goes crazy with the woman in the back. Herc gets a whip and hangs off the end (kind of like the Callisto/Xena chariot fight in RETURN OF CALLISTO)
Xeno decides to send Iolaus and thugs to go get the wagon and rob it. Since Iolaus has no memory of the Herc, he doesn't remember how strong he is. They meet the wagon and another big long fight scene breaks out. Iolaus attacks. It looks like he stabbed the big guy. Commercial break.
Iolaus just hit the wagon. He doesn't understand why he couldn't kill Herc and runs away. Herc picks up a thug and asks for answers. After they drop off the woman at her home, Spiro said that he was wrong when he judged all Nemians as bad. Herc goes to a tavern looking fro Xeno, but found Iolaus instead. Iolaus hoes to save Xeno. Thenatos is taking Xeno to a swamp.
Thenatos pushes Xeno in the swamp when Herc and Iolaus pop by. Lots of fighting in this ep. Iolaus jumps into the swamp with a vine around his waist to get Xeno. After a very long time, Herc drags Iolaus back up, with Xeno in his arms.
Thenatos, Xeno, and the other thugs go to jail. Xeno tells Iolaus to find another line of work. Herc calls for Fortune, who gives Iolaus his memory back. Iolaus still freaks out on the things he's done.
COMMENTARY:
This commentary is by Kent Simmons.
The second episode of season two, and one wonderful emotional and moving episode about the friendship of Hercules and Iolaus. The introduction of a new goddess, a powerful storyline, and some great acting by Hurst made this ep the real season four premiere.
The storyline was well started with Iolaus feeling like a sidekick, feeling like a sidekick and not a hero, and than not being able to save the woman from falling off the bridge. He needed Fortune, who needed to prove herself, and as she messed up, Iolaus' problems were solved fully as he now never met Hercules and forgot all about the bridge. Now Hercules lost his best friend, and had to deal with his emotions and heros heart.
It was cool to see Iolaus bad. Hurst acted well. The scenes between the Greek Godfather Zeno and Iolaus were wonderful. The best bad Iolaus scene was the one in the inn, were he was playing cards with the thug. In the end Iolaus saved his new friend Zeno, and regained his heros heart. Fortune made her mistake right, as Herc told her not to interfer, and gave Iolaus his memorys back. Iolaus was able to forgive himself for not saving the woman, and the two best friends for together again.
Hercules reaction to Iolaus was surprise. The fight scene between Herc and Iolaus was one of my favorite scenes, as was the scene were Iolaus headed off to save Zeno and Herc asked Iolaus why, because Zeno was bad, and Iolaus saif it was because Zeno was his friend. The scene were Herc and the memorylost Iolaus fought Thantano' thugs was also great.
I give this episode 5 out of 5 stars. It was well worth the watch and has become a favorite of many Iolausians out there, maybe there favorite so far.
TALES OF THE HERCAVERSE
01-13-99. From Kent Simmons. Kevin Sorbo mention in a interview sometime during the summer of 1997 that the first part of the season was filled with lighter episodes and lots of unusual stuff. He must have been joking because "Heros Heart" was pretty dark along with "Regrets Ive Had a Few," "Web of Desire," "Two Men and a Baby," and "Prodigal Sister." He was right about the unusual stuff, as the first 8 episodes had some stuff that was first time done for HTLJ.
01-25-98. Iolaus should avoid people whose names start with "Xen" or "Zen" because they are always popping up when Iolaus feels a need to kill Hercules.
