Sept. 8, 2002 | HARTFORD -- A woman who regained consciousness after being in a coma for five years has a lot of catching up to do.

When Melinda "Xena" Pappas slipped into a coma during the spring of 1997, the second season of Xena: Warrior Princess was still going on.

Shortly before she finalized the legal proceedings to change her given name to Xena in honor of the tough female warrior of the now defunct series, Pappas fell into a coma. Her physician says she contracted meningitis, the inflammation of a membrane that encloses the brain and spinal cord.

"Melinda immediately asked for a remote control and pointed it at the TV in her room," the attending physician said. "When she couldn't find an independent station airing Xena: Warrior Princess, she became quite agitated. We had to sedate her."

When asked how hospital officials will help Ms. Pappas reintegrate into society, the doctor said, "Well, we'll have to take it one day at a time. I honestly don't know how to break it to her. I suppose we could take the good news/bad news approach. The good news is that Xena and Gabrielle finally do share a kiss. The bad news is that Xena is decapitated in the same episode. If only the series had ended better than that, my job would be much easier."
