Tanya Agbayani
"Amazon Princesses and The Priestesses from Mists Of Avalon"
IAXS Research Project #197
Born in San Francisco, California, in 1969, Tanya Agbayani (nee Sempf) is the oldest of five children and grew up mostly in the Bay Area. At a cheesy college party in Berkeley in 1988, Tanya, a student of Holy Names College, met her soul-mate, Nestor Agbayani, a UC Berkeley student. They settled in Bakersfield after college and married in 1993. Nestor is a Structural Engineer and Tanya works for a Bakersfield Medical Group. Despite all the mean things she said about marriage in her article, Tanya sheepishly admits that she loves being married and hopes to someday be a "brood mare in season." When not watching XWP Tanya and Nestor are watching their tribe of 16 Discus fish, a freshwater tropical fish from the Amazon River. Of course, Tanya is the acknowledged "Queen of the Amazon Discus Fish" in her house.
Favorite episode: HERE SHE COMES...MISS AMPHIPOLIS (#35)
Favorite line: Miss Artiphys: "I'm no Princess. I'm a Queen!" HERE SHE COMES...MISS AMPHIPOLIS (#35)
First episode seen: CRADLE OF HOPE (#04) (In summer re-runs) My husband started watching what I thought was another silly kung-fu show. I didn't get hooked until THE TITANS (#10) episode where the question "Is Gab a Virg?" was answered.
Least favorite episode: Any crossover episodes where I have to put up with that self-righteous and smug Hercules who gets way more merchandising just because he has the right plumbing parts.
Ed Baker
""Harlots and Harlots. A Comparison of the Amazon Tribes Shown in Hercules And The Amazon Women and Xena: Warrior Princess"
IAXS Project #327
Ed Baker is a double major (English/History) from the University of Virginia. He graduated in 1987 and has spent the last ten years trying to find a job other than teaching in which he can use his skills. When he's not watching/talking about/writing fanfic about/obsessing over Xena, he's either doing pretty much the same with Star Trek, burying his nose in a book (of nearly any type), rooting for the Chicago Bulls, or trying to find the newest hard-to-get action figure. He also edits an off-line fanzine, Warrior Princess Press.
Favorite episode: A DAY IN THE LIFE (#39)
Favorite line: Xena, to Joxer, about Meg: "She'll be the victim of a lot more circumstances when I get my hands on her." WARRIOR...PRINCESS...TRAMP (#30)

Least favorite episode: Uselesses (ULYSSES [#43]), I refer to it by that name only, but will understand if you use the normal name.

Special to WHOOSH!
Maria B. Erb is a freelance writer living in New Hampshire (that's right, the state that voted for Pat Buchanan). When she's not wondering what editors are doing with her copy, she is busy working on Seedtime and Harvest, a bimonthly newsletter about organic gardening, and writing stuff she hopes will appear in the Christian Science Monitor some time.
Favorite episode: A DAY IN THE LIFE (#39) and anything with Callisto in it.

"Amazon Portrayal in Xena: Warrior Princess"
IAXS Project #304
I am obviously a major Xena fan and also a student of the Amazons. Just completed a Masters Degree in Human Relations and hope to continue on for a Ph.D in Women's Studies. I have been involved with an ongoing project to combat homophobia through sensitivity training at area universities and non-profit organizations. I recently served as Co-President of the OKC chapter of NOW and as State-Vice President.

"Brave Women Warriors of Greek Myth: an Amazon Roster"
IAXS Project #326
I am sixteen years old and in Grade 10. I go to Johnston Heights Secondary in Surrey, British Columbia. I started writing when I was 14. First, I wrote short stories about Star Trek: Voyager, then when Xena: Warrior Princess started in 1995, I wrote about her instead. When I was 15 I finished writing my first novel, Star Trek Voyager: Connections. Then my friend Angela Ekkert and I wrote a Xena novel called, Blood Lines. When I heard about Whoosh!, I contacted Kym. She invited me to write an article and so I put together, Xena's Destiny: The Events And People Who Shaped Her Life, which I hope will be in Whoosh! soon. I have just finished my first script (which is Xena) called, Scars Of Tragedy. I plan to submit it to MCA once I find a good agent.

Joanna Sandsmark
"Amazon Talk Show"
Special to WHOOSH!
Joanna is a television writer and former actress who lives in Los Angeles in a very messy apartment because she has too much stuff -- most of it not Xena-related. But that will change.

Matthew Steele
"The Making of an Amazon Queen"
IAXS Project #261
I was born July 4, 1968 in the vicinity of Tokyo, Japan. My parents were both in the Air Force. We lived in several overseas places including Turkey, Greece, and the Philippines. We returned to the states in the early 70s and lived in Colorado, Virginia, and North Carolina. I went to UNC-Asheville and received my B.S. in Computer Science in December 1995. After living with the family in Asheville for over 10 years, I moved out to Chapel Hill were I remain today, still engaged in the ongoing trial of the job search. I enjoy computers, sci-fi/fantasy, role-playing (Champions, WoD, Star Trek, and several of my own inventions), and chattering inanely to captive audiences.
Favorite episode: A DAY IN THE LIFE (#39)
Favorite line: Callisto to Xena: "Xena, how I've missed you. Tartarus is sooo boring, same old torture every day, every day." INTIMATE STRANGER (#31)

Least favorite episode: SOLSTICE CAROL (#33)
Gregory R. Swenson
"Hippolyta's Girdle or Discovering Maslow's Hierarchy in Amazon Culture"
IAXS Project #331
I am turning out to be a deconstructionist, one who searches for the similarities between several works of literature, film, or television. I caught this bug the first time I realized that the movie Alien was based on the movie The Thing. Now I am taking Xena: Warrior Princess apart to see how it works. I have found that it is fun and easy to do -- the Xena production staff have borrowed so heavily from other sources that watching an episode is like playing Trivial Pursuit. This has given me a great appreciation for the Xena staff for two reasons: (1) They must have sifted through mountains of source material, and (2) when they write an episode they intertwine enough allusions together that careful thinking is required to deduce them all.
Favorite episode: REMEMBER NOTHING (#26) Xena emerges from her vision with a strong feeling of who she is and what she must do.
Favorite line: Xena to Diana in WARRIOR...PRINCESS (#15): "Well, you're going to have to convince people you're me and I like dark."

Whoosh! Token Guy Who Lifts the Heavy Stuff
When he's not working for a big Science/Engineering company that (amongst other things) designs, builds, launches, and operates exploratory spacecraft, Bret writes fantasy novels and short stories. Bret is a man of many skills, having also previously been an Olympic-qualified archer, a drummer in the Butch Grinder Band, a newsreader for Public Television Station KVCR, and a Deputy Sheriff for the County of San Bernardino, California. Cynthia Ward Cooper
Supreme Keeper of the Sacred FAQ
Cynthia Cooper was born in Fort Riley, Kansas on December 18, 1959, to a young Army officer and his Southern belle wife. Her early years were marked not only by incessant travel, but also by the knowledge that her birthdate had been calculated to maximize her parents' tax benefits. After a number of adventures, including her rather surprising matriculation from Rice University, Cynthia moved to Dallas, where a promising career as a neo-punk hair model was cut short due to an unfortunate follicular accident. While waiting for her hair to grow back, she earned a master's degree in library science, and is presently masquerading as a technical librarian in a Dallas-area public library. Present obsessions include bad horror movies, Richard III, and the study of ritual cannibalism (though she hastens to assure all that she's a vegetarian). Cynthia has been an ardent Xenite since the very first episode of XWP, and frequently expresses the opinion that the world would be a far better place if everyone would just sit down together and watch Xena once a week.
Favorite XWP episode to rewatch: THE ROYAL COUPLE OF THIEVES (#17)
Favorite XWP episode overall: THE GREATER GOOD (#21) and REMEMBER NOTHING (#26)

Rita Schnepp, also known online as Athena/Rita Reckless, is a Network Engineer at Pepperdine University. She lives in Los Angeles, CA. Rita 'was' a triathlete whose favorite hobby was cross-country running until she came across "Xena: Warrior Princess" on the 'telly' back in October of '95. She has since grown into a 'Xenaficionado' and veritable couch potato. Having been through "Xena De-tox" twice, she can now make it once around the block without having to stop to watch a re-run. She is creator of the "Coffee TaWk" website, (http://pc-rschnepp. pepperdine.edu), and a member of the Southern California Xenafest I, II and III organizing committees.

Laura Sue Dean
Whoosh! Correspondent; "News, Gossip, and Rumors"
I was born and raised in TOPEKA, KANSAS. I am a twenty-(mumble) year-old aspiring actress transplanted to Hollywood and adore watching, learning and reporting to fans all about Xena: Warrior Princess.
When I am not obsessing about myself or the show, I love to shop till I drop, hang out at the Phoenix Room, and "dish" with my other actress friends (Tori Spelling and Shannon Dougherty). I've just completed my first major film role: the mother in "Little Ezekiel" and have several television commercials under my belt. My manager (Stanley -- short for Stanislavsky) swears that my career is ready to take off...I hope he's right!
Favorite XWP episode: THE QUEST (#37) (Oooh! Didn't Renee just nail that entire episode? Gives me chills when I watch the amazing work she did there.)
Favorite XWP line: Gabrielle to Iolaus: "I would tell her how empty my life was before she came along... about all the things I've learned from her, and and that I love her" THE QUEST (#37)

Tom Simpson
Whoosh! Art Director and Betsy's Whipping Boy
http://www.xenafan.com
Giant lizards destroying buildings and toasters taking over the world are only some of the strange products from Tom's wacky imagination. Tom has worked in public television, at MTV, and currently works as a Production Associate at iVillage in NYC. From time to time when he's not busy smooching his significant other he runs a little Xena page. He also enjoys watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other fine television products. Television is our friend, we should all love and respect it. It gives so much and asks so little. And that's all he needs to say.

Chris Clogston
Whoosh! Proofreader
My B.S. degree is in Biology (1980) but I've enjoyed a busy non-Ph.D career in biochemistry --I've authored or co-authored over twenty scientific papers in journals such as Analytical Biochemistry, Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Blood, Cell, Nature, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Protein Expression and Purification and in several years' of Proceedings volumes: Techniques in Protein Chemistry. I've co-authored a chapter on the folding of human recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in Protein Folding: In Vivo and In Vitro, published by the American Chemical Society. However, I am not a Bard. I'm a native Southern Californian and therefore have a proficiency in disaster preparedness. I've co-authored the Research Disaster Recovery plan at my place of employment and am a member of the Emergency Response Team there. I became involved in Xena fan activities shortly after the Burbank convention. Seems to have had something to do with obtaining the chakram at the charity auction. I currently hold memberships in: The Protein Society (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology) Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities International Arthurian Society, North American Branch, The Mythopoeic Society, Society for Creative Anachronism.

Christine Kearns
Assistant to the Token Guy
I'm originally from NY, but in 1995 I moved to Harrisburg, PA because I have a thing for mountains and fresh air. I'm 28 years old and am currently unemployed. I was an asst. manager of a retail store until a injury to my knee. So right now, I'm spending most of my time working on computers and doing desktop publishing from my home. My career goal is to become a film director or a spy for the CIA. Neither seems likely at the moment.
When I'm not working on my web page or doing something else Xena related (which is not often), I can be found in front of the television cheering on the WNBA, especially the NY Liberty. I'm very involved in politics. I am a huge "Titanic" and history buff. I have a strange fascination with vampires and spies. I am an avid reader, though most of what I have read in the past 8 months is fan fiction. I also love to write, but I haven't yet posted any Xena fan fiction. I have often said that my alter-ego is a warrior, but I have the heart and soul of a bard.
Favorite episode: Any episode which shows Xena's darkside: SINS OF THE PAST (#01), DESTINY (#36), IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? (#24), THE RECKONING (#06), and DREAMWORKER (#03)
Favorite line: It's a tie! Xena: "First thing is that a sword is not a staff" RETURN OF CALLISTO (#29); Xena: "Tell Hades to prepare himself. A new Xena is born tonight. With a new purpose in life...Death!" DESTINY (#36)

Marian Pappaceno
Assistant to the Editor-In-Chief
Marian Pappaceno was born to the glitter city of Las Vegas in 1964. Always the tough gal, she was happy to play the role of the bad guy with the neighborhood kids, usually as a thief or alien-come-to-conquer-earth. An artist at heart, she draws constantly when not at her job in nuclear medicine. As mistress of The Temple Of Joxer, she does not take kindly to Ted-bashing and lusts after anyone who knows all the words to his song.

Beth Gaynor
Whoosh! HTML Coder
http ://arcane.eng.ohio-state.edu/bgaynor/xenarate.htm
Beth Gaynor lives in Columbus, Ohio (go Buckeyes!), and works for small company called DPEC. She edits, codes, and organizes text from books to make them into courses that people take on their computers. Outside of the office, she is often spotted at the Columbus Zoo, where she volunteers as a docent. This usually involves answering the question "Where's the bathroom?", although she gets breaks from that long enough to talk about the animals and help the keepers. Beth is peeking around the corner at her thirtieth birthday and stays young and vigorous by battling for house supremacy alongside her husband against their two cats. So far, the struggle is too close to call.
Favorite XWP episodes: A DAY IN THE LIFE (#39) and THE PRICE (#44).

Diane Silver
Contributing Editor
Amazed by her fervent Xena addiction, Diane Silver was once a serious sort who would have scoffed at the idea of a whoosh or a chakram cam. Today, she loves them. Silver has been a professional writer for more than 20 years, including stints at United Press International and The Wichita Eagle. She once took a brief detour into politics, working as press secretary for a Democratic candidate for Kansas governor. Currently an editor for a nonprofit foundation, Silver is also pursuing a freelance writing career. Her second book, The New Civil War: The Lesbian and Gay Struggle for Civil Rights, will be published by Franklin Watts in 1997. She is at work on her third book, a memoir called Sacred Moments: The Journey of a Lesbian Marriage. Her work has also appeared in national publications, including Ms. magazine. A graduate of Michigan State University (Hi there, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert), Silver shamefully admits to never having been much of a Spartan sports fan. She lives in Lawrence, Kansas, with her son, dog and two cats. A recent convert to the Internet, she posts on the mailing lists as Silver and on the NetForum as Freedom2.

Karen Maeda Allman
Whoosh! Assistant Editor
Karen Maeda Allman (aka Heparin) is doggedly trying to finish her dissertation so she can at last put the letters 'PhD' after her name. When not reading and publishing on multiraciality (and its interconnections with gender identity and sexuality) she is one of the booksellers of Red and Black Bookstore Collective in Seattle, Washington. Heparin is also a registered nurse, teacher, former punk rock singer/songwriter with Conflict U.S. (Unjust/Placebo Records) and has been published in music papers (Slash, Slit, The New York Rocker), Asian American Community Papers (The Pacific Reader , International Examiner) and in academic periodicals and books (most recently in Multiracial Experience: Racial Borders as the New Frontier edited by Maria PP Root). Rumor has that she can cook some mighty fine vegetarian eggplant dishes.
Favorite XWP episodes: THE GAUNTLET (HTLJ #12), SINS OF THE PAST (#01), and THE RECKONING (#06). (I tend to like angsty episodes that dwell on Xena's inner turmoil and have lots of Bulgarian style music in the scoring.)
